Sandra's Story
After going to Glenhaven Elementary School, Madison High School, and Portland State College, I taught at Lynch Wood Grade School for the rest of my 20's. After teaching the 6th grade for two years, I moved to teaching the 3rd. There I found my niche. [My 6th grade students will appreciate that:)]
After six years teaching 3rd grade, I left teaching, married, had two children, and stayed at home until they were mid-grade school age. I returned to work in the corporate world and was laid off in my late 50's. After retraining in the medical office field and not finding work, I became certified in braille transcription and am having a very rewarding time doing that as a volunteer. he public school, over the years I have continued on in teaching 3rd grade Sunday School.
Two years ago I had the amazing experience of going on a mission trip to India with my church. Because of my work with braille, I visited the school for the blind that was in the city where we were. I am posting some pictures from that unforgetable encounter on my photo page.
The lastest activity that I have added to my life (as of October 2009) is being a volunteer at the Washington State School for the Blind in Vancouver. As I am increasing my hours there, I am finding that working with the students is immensely rewarding. It will be exciting to see how this will develop over the years.
