Sandra's Story
Life
I love living in Wilmington. I appreciate the relaxed coastal lifestyle. To nourish my contentment, I require the occasional visit to the shore to stare into the ocean and listen to sound of the wind and water in concert.
I entertain myself ballroom dancing, gardening, sewing and spending time with my friends. I still venture out on the town to enjoy dancing to live music. My friends are the life-of-the-party types who enjoy gathering nice groups of people together for frequent potluck dinners and wine tastings. My beverage of choice at any of these gatherings is dark beer. Don't even talk to me about beer unless you find deep satisfaction from savoring every drop of an oatmeal stout.
When I'm home, I'm never alone. My Nanday Conure expects my constant attention and love, but she returns both to me in equal amounts. Her giggles and laughter make smile. I cannot fully describe the experience of living with such a surprisingly intelligent and determined creature. I once taught her a new trick (turn around) in just 7 minutes. I did NOT deliberately teach her how to say "kiss" or to blow a kiss, but somehow she picked up these skills on her own. She now demands smooches on a regular basis,...Expand for more
but especially at bedtime!
Parrots do not make easy pets. They are much more complicated to care for than cats or dogs. Luckily, my little green girl is worth the extra effort.
College
BA in Journalism from UNC-CH. Masters in College Student Development from Appalachian State.
I lived in Hinton James at UNC-CH for all four years with Ann Hoover, who remains my best friend, even though she lives in New Zealand with her husband and children.
Working with the Orientation program at UNC led me to seek my MA in College Student Development at Appalachian. I loved managing ASU's Residence Hall Security program as a grad student.
Workplace
I moved to Wilmington, NC, in 1995 to work in Housing and Residence Life at UNCW.
I opened my own business, Hollywood East Cinema Grill in 2001. It was a 364-seat restaurant and movie theater in Wilmington, NC. We served dinner and a movie at the same time. It was an interesting life for many years, but I eventually grew tired of the 18-hour days and being recognized around town. I sold the business in January of 2007 to return to work at UNCW.
I love working with college students. It is my field, after all. So, UNCW seems a good fit for now.
