Sarah's Story

Life After DHS, went right to college--decided at the last minute not to go to Troy State and went to the Hill instead. After a fairly typical 4 years at the Hill, I went to graduate school for my Masters--chose Saint Louis University because it was in a new area (the Midwest) & because they gave me a nice finanical package. Finished the Masters in two years, met my husband-to-be, & enjoyed "big city" life for a while. Decided to continue with the doctorate--had gotten "hooked" on teaching college students--some of you may have fond(?) memories of your composition 101 classes--that became my "bread & butter" so to speak. Headed for Athens, Georgia to continue with my education--wanted to get back to the South. Spent 4 years in Athens--took two to do the courses & then I worked at the University full-time for two years teaching. Married my graduate school sweetheart in August of 1987. Had our first child, Matthew, in 1989. My husband decided to return to sch...Expand for more
ool and get a law degree--but he chose a school in New Hampshire. After two years of looking (and one year of living apart) in 1990 I found a full-time position in New Hampshire at Franklin Pierce College--where I've been ever since. Had two more children, Elizabeth in 1993 & Peter in 1995. I've worked my way up to full professor at FPU, became Executive Dean in 2018 and Associate Provost in 2021. I teach composition and literature, & still love being in the classroom. In 2003, I was named New Hampshire's Outstanding Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement and Support of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. I was very honored by this award. My husband is a legislative attorney (he drafts legislation for both Senators and Representatives in the State legislature); we live in a beautiful, old (built in 1889) New England farmhouse, and are now looking at the end of our careers (retirement awaits!)
