Sarah's Story

Share something about myself. Here goes: There's a lot to say and really nothing at all. I'm still very much the same person I was 20 something years ago. Maybe I'm a LITTLE more mature, but not much. I have much longer hair, I'm a lot less 'dark and broody' in appearance as in I don't wear all black for the sake of all black and all those earrings in my ears any longer, and I'm still very silly or prone to being less serious if I can help it. I think my high school friends - most of whom I am still in touch with oddly enough (Beth Meyers is STILL my best friend after all these years), would say I'm a lot less 'intense' now that I'm older. I would probably just say I mellowed out a lot, or maybe it's just that I don't drink as many big gulps and my caffeine consumption is significantly lower. I became more of an adrenaline junkie, but paid for it with a bunch of herniations, but I'm working on getting back in shape after all those little injuries and that nonsense so I can go back to scuba diving (I was instructor level and doing some tech diving too - favorite dive was the German U-boat 853 off of Block Island) and other outdoorsy type stuff. My ex-boyfriend and I did a fair bit of hiking and kayaking on vacations in our 4 1/2 years including some back country camping in the Grand Canyon and Death Valley. I had discovered Death Valley when Beth Meyers was a ranger out there many years ago. She does way more cool things than I do these days like ride motorcycles with her husband all over the place like Europe. I'd be jealous if I did think she was just so damn cool! From 1986 until 1997 I lived in New Orleans. It is only since Katrina changed so much of it that I have somewhat stopped thinking of it as home, but New Orleans is a whole other story and requires lots of time and perhaps a scotch or two to regale it. I suppose I still fall under the artsy description that I did in H.S., but now I don't much look the part, more, you guessed it outdoorsy. I find it funny that they call what we did as artsy 20 years ago (which was kinda a throw back to Greenwich Village 1960's then) as Goth now. They're still doing the same stuff and listening to the same stuff we did. Though we were...Expand for more
just dabbling in piercings compared to what they pierce now. I remember my grandmother freaking out about the six holes I had in my ears where I wore 6 little silver hoops. My mother with three holes in each of her ears fluffed her hair over her ears as my grandmother continued her indignation and muttered something about not being able to watch me all night so I didn't put anymore holes in my head. I have seen good looking younger guys with sharp things sticking out from their chins and thought just how easy my mom got off. That, and how did these guys kiss girls and what girl would wanna kiss a guy that could leave her with a physical scar! I know relationships can leave emotional scars but no real ones when you're just kissing! But, whatever floats your boat. Still, I think I'll just look for my next guy to be without a face full of shrapnal though.. Other than what I've stated so far above, I feel like I am always at work, I live out on Long Island now about 1/2 hour from my folks and where I grew up, I work in midtown Manhattan - always thought I was a city girl until I moved there - what do you know? I'm a country girl. I would never have believed that if you told me that 20 years ago. I don't own a house or have any kids. I did own a sailboat for a while and I have a 17 year old cat. I used to have a horse when I lived in New Orleans for a while and used to take her to the bar where I bartended for a few years - but only on nights off since it's hard to get ones work done and deal with a beer drinking, popcorn eating, semi drunk and very flirtatious mare. But that is another story for another time. I thought I was going to be a photographer when I was in high school and was for a while including freelancing in that aspect here where I work, but I also thought I wanted to be a fashion designer when I was about 15 and now you couldn't pay me enough to be interested in fashion such as Prada and stuff of that ilk. I just don't get excited by shoes and handbags I'm afraid. It must be from some kind of damage to my brain like when I got a 104.7 fever in college and have had a 96.8 body temperature ever since. Okay, I'm getting bored talking about myself so - see you in the gumbo...
