Sarah's Story

Life After I graduated high school, I went to Sierra Community College in Rocklin for 3 years, where I earned my A.A. Degree in Liberal Arts and my A.S. Degree in Computer Applications. Then I went on to Sacramento State for 2 and 1/2 years. I chose Sac State because it was close enough to home that I could go home to see my family when I wanted, yet far enough away that I could live in the dorms and get a taste of freedom and independence. My first roommate was a nightmare, but the rest in the 4 semesters to follow were wonderful. I loved the dorm life (except for the noisy neighbors and the drinkers). I graduated from CSUS in December of 2003 with my B.A. Degree in Communication Studies. I got hired to the State of California 10 1/2 years ago in April, and I love it! I was hired as an Office Assistant and was promoted a year or so later to Office Technician. I am now an Executive Assistant for the State, and I've been in that position for a little over 3 years. I love it! I moved out and have had my own apartment for 10 1/2 years. My apartment is 1.5 miles from my job with the State, which is really nice. I'm not married yet, and I don't have any kids (and I don't see either of those happening in the near future), but that's ok with me. I keep plenty busy with my work, church, and family. I also have an adorable little niece who I don't see a whole lot, but who is just as sweet as can be. I love her a whole whole lot!!! 😍 I keep in touch with all my high school and college friends through Facebook, the Internet, email, phone calls, and visits. Hope life is treating all of you as well as it is treating me. Take care. School My grade school education began at St. Joseph's school here in Auburn. I went there until 3rd grade. After having a difficult year in 3rd grade, my parents decided to have me take a "year to grow" by repeating 3rd grade at Rock Creek School. It was the best move they ever made for me. I went to Rock Creek School through 5th grade. I went to E.V. Cain School for 6th through 8th grade. That was very challenging and frustrating at times, but it was there that I made many friends whom I still keep in touch with today. I also became the top speller in the school. When school spelling bees were announced, everybody knew that I would show up and beat them, so many of them didn't bother coming to challenge me. Several times, since I was the only one who showed up to compete, I would automatically get in to the next round -- without having to spell one word! Mrs. Heyn was one of my favorite teachers. She taught my P.E. classes in 7th and 8th grade. She was the first P.E. teacher who realized that I was very gifted and special, even though I had no skills in sports. She is one of the reasons that I made it through E.V. Cain. I also belonged to the E.V. Cain theater group, The Cain Company Performers. That was fun as well. I went on to high school at Placer High School. It was not fun being teased there and having the teachers be too lenient to give a care, but I still liked it. I graduated from there in 1998. I went on to Sierra College because I had no clue as to what I wanted to do career-wise with my life (and I still don't know for sure, even now!). I loved Sierra because it was close to home and was a good transition for me from high school into college. At Sierra, I earned an A.A. Degree in Liberal Arts and an A.S. Degree in Computer Applications. I went through many majors, including Business and Graphic Design. It was not until I finished my first year at California State University, Sacramento, that I just decided to stick with Communication Studies just to get the degree and get out of college. I loved CSUS as well (except for all the studying and homework). It was my first time away from home for a long period of time. I loved living in the dorms. CSUS was close enough that I could go home when I got homesick in the dorms (happened very rarely), yet far enough away that I could live in the dorms and be independent. My parents paid for my whole college education at both Sierra and CSUS. I am very t...Expand for more
hankful for that. In my whole dorm experience, I only had one roommate who was a nightmare. Luckily, she came first. I guess she was sent my way to prepare me to appreciate the good ones that came along in the following semesters?! I still keep in touch with many of them. Faith, family, and friends carried me through all the trials and tribulations of college. In December 2003, I graduated with a B.A. Degree in Communication Studies, and in April 2004, I got my first full-time job. College I began college in June of 1998, just after graduating high school. I went to Sierra Community College for 3 years. Originally, I wanted to major in Business so that I could open my own pet shop business. I focused on my G.E. for the first year and a half that I was there. In my 4th semester, I took 2 business courses, and two days into them, I found out the hard way that Business was not the major for me. I didn't know what to do, so I went to a great counselor on campus who helped me drop my two business courses and pick up two computer courses. She also said that if I completed those courses and my other courses that semester, I would be able to get my A.A. Degree in Liberal Arts. I was thrilled. I graduated with my Liberal Arts Degree in May of 2000. Then I was not sure what I was going to do next. I had no idea what I wanted to major in at a 4 year school, so I spent an extra year at Sierra instead. Ironically, I found out about the Computer Applications Degree (A.S.) on the night that I graduated with my degree in Liberal Arts. I completed my Computer Applications Degree the following December (2000) and tried out Graphic Design in January 2001. I took all my courses that semester at Sierra college, except for one that was offered through Sierra's crossover program at CSUS. So, I got a taste of CSUS beginning then. I stayed in the Graphic Design major through Spring 2002 until I hit a "road block". At that point, I was so tired and just wanted out of college. So, I consulted another counselor at CSUS and found out that Communication Studies would be the quickest way to the diploma, so I changed my major once again. I graduated with my B.A. in Communication Studies in December 2003. Workplace My first job was at Jack-In-The-Box restaurant, one day a week, during my senior year of high school. It lasted 1 year. I hated having to be there at 6 AM on that day each week, and I hated the fast pace. So, I found another food job at Round Table Pizza at Bel Air Shopping Center. That also lasted 1 year. Slower pace, but still food. I liked it better, but I wanted more. So, I got a job as a cashier at Rite Aid Drugstore. I worked there for 2 years before transferring to Sac State. From then on, I hopped between jobs due to being a full-time student at CSUS. I have worked at KMart in Rocklin, the Dining Commons on campus, and the Bookstore on campus. From June 2003 until Easter Day 2004, I worked for KMart in Auburn. By that time, I began to suffer from "retail burnout". KMart really got on my nerves. My first real job out of college was working for NovaCare in Roseville in the billing department, and I loved it!!!!!!!! Sadly, though, the corporate office decided to move the office back east to Pennsylvania. Since I could not afford to move with it, I was back on the job hunting trail. About 2 months later, my mom had back problems, and she needed me to help her out. She ended up having back surgery about a month later. In the meantime, I was interviewing for jobs every chance I had. I finally got an interview with the Department of Industrial Relations for the State of California. The day after I interviewed, my mom had her surgery. About 4 hours after she came out of surgery (it was a successful surgery), I got a call from the State saying that I got the job. I was thrilled! I've been there since April of 2005. I was hired as an Office Assistant in the Amusement Rides section. After about a year, I was promoted to Office Technician in the same office. I really like it and would highly recommend the State to anyone looking for employment.
