Sarah's Story
Life
After I left high school, I went to Carleton University and had a great time. I loved Carleton and had great fun as President of the Ski Club. After completing an honours B.A. in Psychology, I switched gears and moved towards the media, working on the cable channel as a "call-in" news host, producer and crew coordinator. While there, I was accepted into the graduate journalism program at Concordia University in Montreal. When I graduated, I started in the print field at the Russell Villager but then moved to my preference, which is radio, and began working as an anchor/reporter for the radio station Q101-CJET, in Smiths Falls. After a mass layoff there, I was retained as a weekend newsreader but soon thereafter, I was hired as a radio reporter by CBC radio Ottawa. I became the back-up municipal reporter there and then went on to establish a new specialty, called the social issues beat. After meeting my partner, Mark Wolynice, we began our own business in Ottawa. It began ...Expand for more
as an Internet/Virtual Reality cafe on Elgin Street called Reality Bytes and then when we finally got our liquor licence it became the Elbow Room. We sold that in 1997 and came to Calgary, Alberta, where I now live. I worked for CBC radio here for a while then became ill and returned to Ontario for medical treatment. I travelled between Ontario and Alberta during my medical treatment and worked in short-term positions, including working as a journalism/English instructor at Algonquin College and SAIT. I am now healthy and am the proud mother of Callie (Calissa M.), who was born in February 2003. I am now a "work-at-home-mother" and manage our rental business. Mark and I converted our retail business in Ottawa into a rental housing business here. I am thrilled to be a mother and grateful to be able to stay home with my child with our home-based business.
