Saralee's Story
Life
I was born in Michigan and grew up on a farm. We sold the farm in 1946 and moved into a trailer. We travelled a lot when I was growing up. My Dad never liked to stay in one spot very long. I enlisted in the Woman's Army Corp when I was 20. I enjoyed the two years I served. I gave up the WAC's after I got married. My husband was career Army. I couldn't serve and have children. We had four sons.
School
It was difficult going to school We usually attended two or three schools each year.My Freshman year I started the year in North Carolina one semester. then to California for six weeks. I completed the year in New Mexico. I completed my High School classes through the American Correspondance School from 1954 -1955. I needed a High School diploma in order to enlist in the Woman's Army Corp, But after all my work, the military would not accept my diploma. I had to take the GED at Lakeland, FL High School . College

I then continued my education and earned by MA in 1977 from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
Workplace
I taugh for the Walker County Board of Education in Jasper, Alabama for 26 years,from 1971 to 1998, I taught for 10 years from 1972 to 1982 at Nauvoo Jr. High School in Nauvoo and 16 years, from 1982 - 1998 at Empire Jr. High School. Empire
Military
I enlisted 5 November 1955, took Basic Training at Ft. McClellen, Alabama. I received a leave to go home for Christmas. I compled Basic Training in January 1956. I was transferred to Ft. Sam Houston, Texas for Dental Lab Training. The end of May I was given orders to repot to Ft. Riley, Kansas. at the end of my first years service I was made PFC. In december 1956 I met my future husband. We dated for nine months and were married. I got my discharge in October 1957. a month after we got married. I could not remain in service and have children. Nine months and 1 week after we got married we had our first son.
