Scarlet's Story
School
I quit school when I was 15 and took my GED when I was 16 and worked full time as a CRNA in a nursing home. At 17 I went to Bible college in Bemidji MN where I met my husband and married at 19. At 38 yrs old I returned to school for my LPN and then worked in a Pediatric unit for three years. I then returned to school for my RN degree. At this point I do not plan on attending more school...but you never know. I love to learn and I love my profession and I just may find my way back to the classroom someday to become a nurse midwife.
As far as the questions above... in gradeschool I had a big crush on Clyde Overman, I remember putting notes in his back pockets when I was in 3rd grade and he was a senior. He was always very kind not to make fun of me.
I'd have to say the teacher who inspired me the most was the Principal at the Fairfield High School. John McKinna. He used to call me into his office just to visit, he'd gone to school with my mom and used to tell me stories about tipping over my grandmothers outhouse.
I would never do grade school or high school all over again it was a terrible stressful time in my life at home. School just added to that stress. I don't know how the kids cope today with all the peer pressure that they have. It was hard enough back then just dealing with the whole popularity issue... or my ranch is bigger than your...today I'm your friend tomorrow I'm not... YUCK!! One thing great that came out of all that for me is that I learned early on I would never take anothers opinion of someone else as my own, I would always give others the benefit of the ...Expand for more
doubt and I would always be a good friend no matter what. Those I learned in second grade and have stuck with them through out my life.
Workplace
I began as a CRNA in a nursing home at 15. After I married I continued on as a CRNA in a nursing home. I then went on to be an aerobic instructor in a health club in the Chicago land area. When I was 23 I went to work for American Airlines at O'hare airport in Chicago. After working for 4 years we adopted our first child and I became a stay at home mom AKA Domestic Engineer. When our second child was 9 months old we moved to central Mexico and worked as missionaries, we worked with the street children and started a feeding program where we fed 75-200 children one meal a day 7 days a week. I contracted Hepatitis A and Typhoid fever and almost died. We moved back to the states where I continued to be a Domestic Engineer for 3 years and recoup from being so ill. We adopted our 3rd child while home in the states. We then returned to Mexico for another year. While in Mexico I gave birth to our fourth child ( who holds dual citizenship for life). We returned to the US to Northern MN where my husbands family lives, at the time his mothers health was not good.
Until I returned to school to become a LPN I did not work outside the home. I am now a RN in the day surgery/ recovery room unit of a hospital in a neighboring city about 45 miles away. At the present I am a casual nurse that works almost full time. I love my job and the people that I work with. I am able to bring love, compassion and hope to many people, which makes my job very rewarding.
