Scott's Story
Life
I left high school after my Junior year and joined Air Force. I became a linguist (North Vietnamese) but about the only thing I remember is, "Don't shoot me, I know secrets." The best thing about that experience was that it introduced me to Monterey, Ca.
After I got out of the Air Force, I returned to Kansas, then hitchhiked back and forth to West Coast several times. What can I say, it was a different era.
I settled in Monterey Bay area and came out shortly after that.
I worked in restaurants for several years, then bought, lived on and sailed a sailboat for a couple of years.
I moved to San Francisco, then to a sleepy town north of San Francisco. I worked in a wild animal reserve and took care of lions, tigers, wolves and a chimp; and also took them around to schools to try to raise awareness for species that were endangered.
I came home again in the late 70's for a short time, and worked at Cosmosphere - when it was much smaller and before Max made off with the artifacts.
I moved back to California again, then met a French woman whose visa was expiring and moved to Southern France with her. Stayed there for awhile, then moved to Kansas again.
I'd played the piano since I was about 4, so I started playing in a band. We toured a bit around the midwest with a mildly successful band - mainly bacause of Martina McBride's voice, back before she was McBride's bride.
I decided to study music, so I left the band and went back to school. College. After 7 years of studying in every major area, I graduated in Music, along with several other huge amoun...Expand for more
ts of credits in other fields that were equally unsaleable.
Then I fell in love. The law didn't recognize our love, so I went to law school to learn how to draw up legal documents for myself, my partner and other gay people who needed them. I became a lawyer and practiced law, albeit in somewhat alternative areas.
I outlived my boyfriend and almost of my entire circle of friends I had left behind when I left California. Somehow, I started teaching law instead of practicing it. While doing that, I fell in love with a British guy who also taught law - we met teaching a comparative law course in London.
After spending a couple of years travelling back and forth from Kansas to The Netherlands (where he taught and lived), I decided to move. I eventually obtained my residency in The Netherlands and now live there with him. (Update - we got married about a year ago.)
I never did graduate from high school and didn't get a GED. For someone who has always hated school and organized learning, I suppose it's some sort of cosmic justice that I ended up going to school longer than anyone I know and now teach law. Go figure.
I teach at Universiteit Maastricht (The Netherlands), and feel more at home here than I ever did in Kansas. How did that happen?
I still have fond memories of those people back in Kansas who didn't try to lynch me. And for those who who did who have moved beyond that, I'm a forgiving sort of guy. If you visit Holland, give a holler. If we remember each other, coffee's on me. If I don't, I'll still have coffee, but you'll have to pay.
