Scott's Story
After graduation, continued working daytime at Calumet Carton Co., Chicago Heights Music Store teaching drums after school hours and playing drums in bands in the evenings and on weekends. Groups included the After Dark Edition, Tommy Spanos and the Rich Hedlt Trio. I also customized a 1976 Chevy Van called "Starship" and showed it at shows; won 42 awards in 3-4 years. In 1978 married my high school sweetheart, Leslie Belford. We have been married for 47 years, not counting the years dating in high school. We have three daughters and many grand pets.
In 1981 we moved to Tucson AZ. where we currently reside. I became involved with the Rural/Metro Fire Department - Pima County Ops and worked there for 18-years as a reserve firefighter '81, Firefighter '82, Lieutenant '86, Captain '86, District Chief '88, Deputy Chief '92 and Fire Chief '95. Graduated from University of Phoenix with a Bachelor of Art in Management in '96 and a Master of Art in Organizational Management in '98. In '81 I also played drums at a country bar on Speedway called Rusty's. All the other musicians in the band had played at the Grand Ole Opry during their lifetime. I also had the privilege of having country artists' who were playing at the Tucson Convention Center music hall stop by and set in and played with us.

til June 2020 when I retired. In '20 I volunteered for two years with the Golder Ranch Fire District as an Assistant Chief of Special Projects for the District. During my career in the fire service, I have been fortunate to be in volunteer leadership positions such as member, president or board chairman with numerous organizations; American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, Kiwanis Club of Casa Grande, Central Arizona Valley Institute of Technology, Kiwanis Southwest District, Fire Chief Association of Pinal County, National Fire Exploring Emergency Services Planning Committee, Arizona Fire Chiefs Association, Western Fire Chiefs Association, International Fire Chiefs Association and the Greater Tucson Fire Foundation. I have also been rewarded with numerous awards and recognition during my career. A couple that are notable is the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Fire Chief of the Year Award with the Arizona Fire Chiefs Association; William Spurgeon Award and the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America; George F Hixson Fellowship Award from Kiwanis International and the Chief Scott R Miller Fire Service Scholarship Fund for fire students at Pinal Community College.
We purchased a '21 Ford Transit 250 and customized it for traveling around and seeing all the great things we have in the US during my retirement. We are currently traveling and enjoying life together. Life is great!
