Sean's Story
Life
I completed my bachelor's degree in probability and statistics at Northern Illinois University (NIU) in December of 2001. I got my master's degree in December of 2003. I stayed at NIU for the spring of 2004 to take some actuarial courses. I still live with my mom and my sister in Frankfort, IL. My dad passed away in September of 2022. I have two nephews and one niece. I am still single, and I love sports as usual. I completed an internship with NASA in Huntsville, AL during the summer of 2002. I served as a graduate assistant at NIU from 2001 to 2004. I have lived in the dorms during my entire time at NIU, and I have enjoyed making a lot of friends. I hope to hear from anyone who knew me in high school.
School
I have been in school since I was three years old. I have had a lot of good teachers throughout the years that I have been in school. A lot of my teachers have helped me learn a lot of new things. I have also met a lot of people throughout my academic career. I graduated from 8th grade in 1992, and I graduated from high school in 1996. After I finished high school, I completed PHI (Program for Hearing Impaired) at NIU, and it was a one-year college prepartory program. After I finished the program, I enrolled as a college student at NIU. I have done very well at NIU. My parents have also been very supportive of me, and they have helped me a lot along the way. During high school, I liked watching the Rhythm Knights (a pom pom squad) and the basketball games. I have known a lot of the cool guys in high school, and it was a lot of fun. I was a student leader in P.E. during my senior year, and I enjoyed it so much. I always liked sports, but I never played on an athletic team.
During my elementary and junior high years, I was an out of district student since I had to be in a hearing-impaired program. I had a lot of cool teachers, and many good people supported me. I can remember spending a lot of hours riding the bus. I enjoyed recess when I was in elementary school, and I also learned math very fast. Overall, I have enjoyed my years in school.
College
I went to Northern Illinois University from 1996 to 2004. When I was an undergraduate, I had to change my major a couple of times, and I finally settled for Mathematics - Probability and Statistics in the Fall of 2000. I took a lot of mathematics and statistics courses, and I have enjoyed them all except for the ones that had a lot of proofs in it. I always like working with numbers. I got my bachelor's degree in December of 2001, and I finished working on my master's degree in applied probability and statistics in December of 2003. I did my master's thesis, and it went very well. Graduate school is hard, but I managed to get through it.
I lived in the dorms during my entire academic career here at NIU. I lived on the hearing impaired-interest floor in Grant Towers South for my first two years, and I enjoyed living on the floor a lot. I met a lot of cool people on the floor, and I had a lot of fun. I moved to Douglas Hall, and I lived on the same floor with my brother for 3 years. I always like socializing with a lot of different people. I was involved with Hall Council from 1998 to 2004, and I enjoyed it very much. I have also served on the executive board on my floor for a couple of years. I got inducted to the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) in the Fall of 2002. I served as the Vice-President of NRHH during the Spring of 2003. I have enjoyed the various activities that the dorm has to offer. The only downside of living in the dorms is that the food isn't that great at all.
Overall, I have met a lot of people in the residence halls during my time at NIU. I finished school in May of 2004
Workplace
During my junior and senior years in high school, I worked as an office aide. I stuffed envelopes, delivered passes, posted announcements, and did other office related tasks. I enjoyed having conversations with some of the other office aides, and I also enjoyed looking at the old yearbooks that they had in the office.
During my first year at NIU, I worked in the cafeteria as a dishroom worker. It was a very unpleasant job, and I had to wash dishes. It was a demanding job at times since they were short on help. I didn't like working in the cafeteria at all, and I was glad when I was done with that job.
A couple of years later, I worked as a busboy at Liang's Steak and Stir Fry, a Chinese restaurant, in Frankfort, IL. I met a lot of good people there, and I always liked to clean a lot of things. I liked to work hard at Liang's. I remember staying at the bar after work to talk with the other workers, and I enjoyed all of the chats. The restaurant closed down a week after I quit.
In the summer of 2000, I worked at International Truck Engine Corp. as an intern. I was indexing files on a computer, and it was boring sometimes. But, the other interns and I always enjoyed having lunch. I enjoyed all of the conversations.
Last, I served an internship with NASA during the summer of 2002. It was a totally different experience for me because I had to get used to living in a different state. It was always hot while I was in Alabama. I did a lot of research on lightning, and I learned a lot of cool stuff on lightning. I had a very cool mentor, and I enjoyed working with him. I went to many different restaurants, and I loved the all-you-can eat buffets. I had to learn how to cook on my own, and I did very well with it. It was very lonely at times, but I enjoyed the internship anyway.
From 2001 to 2004, I worked as a graduate assistant in the Division of Statistics at Northern Illinois University. I graded homework papers, proctored exams, and worked in the Statistical Consulting Lab. It was a good experience for me.
I worked for the Illinois State Tollway Highway Authority from December 2005 to December 2014. I worked in the I-PASS department from December of 2005 through July of 2008. I worked in the Office of Inspector General from September 2008 to December 2014.
I left the Illinois State Tollway Highway Authority in December of 2014 to accept a job with the Illinois Department of Human Services in Chicago, IL. I worked as a Rehabilitation Case Coordinator I from December 2014 to May 2017. I was promoted to Rehabilitation Case Coordinator II in May of 2017, and that is my current position. I enjoy my current job a lot, and I am very happy working there.
