Sean's Story
I was born in Virginia but moved to North Syracuse when I was one. My parents divorced when I was six, and I predominantly lived with my mother, who has multiple sclerosis. Given that, I seldom had any social interaction, instead developing mad math and computer skills that typecast me for life. Hence, I was the district spelling bee champion, the two-time math league champion, and the co-editor-in-chief for Horizons Literary Magazine, probably simply because I had no life and nothing better to do. I was probably most famous for answering math problems for people in the high school halls, running in the halls, and exceedingly fast typing (I type over 150 wpm). In my spare time, I compiled all sorts of data and statistics on things of seldom worthwhile value. I was the statistician for the Mensa Scrabble-by-Mail SIG in high school and wrote a twenty-page column every other month (despite being 30 years or so younger than just about everyone else in the group) but I hardly told anyone this. After people pushed me into the class nerd slot, a position I admit I courted rather too much, it started to annoy me how much people overrated me and thought my basic knowledge made me some sort of genius.
I went to Cornell dreaming that it would be some sort of intellectual beacon before being brought to my senses and realizing that it was about 80% preppie. I was pretty much ignored by those people, becoming an even bigger loser than I e...Expand for more
ver was in high school, which is saying a lot. Although I couldn't stand the place (enough so I actually feel NOSTALGIC for C-NS), I did get a bachelor's in economics and a master's in applied statistics, a far cry from the pompous way I was talking in high school thinking I was going to get a Ph.D. in math.
My two biggest hobbies for many years have been watching auto racing (ironic because I am a moron and even at this late age have never learned to drive, and because people associate race fans with having a diminished intelligence) and playing Scrabble (mentioned above). I merged my fandom of auto racing, my web design skills, and my statistical obsession to launch what is probably my magnum opus thus far (I love being pretentious, but because I'm so serious, people think that I take my pretension seriously which makes me laugh): race-database.com. I also dream about participating in Scrabble tournaments sometime in the future because of all the cool nerdy people who propagate those communities.
Contrary to people's wildly overrated expectations for me, however, I have not done well in the job market. I had a statistical consulting position over the Internet, but quit because they were sending consistently less work. Since then, I am unemployed, but definitely looking at ANYTHING someone could hire me for. I do not have the ridiculously affluent standards of my Cornell classmates, and wouldn't mind doing something "menial".
