Shannon's Story

Life After leaving High School in 1980, I began full time flying for Golden Bear Aviation in Novato. From 1982 to 1983, I was a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in British Columbia, Canada. After my return to the states, I studied at Northrop University in L.A. and received my Flight Engineer Turbojet rating in 1983. I then flew for the California Department of Forestry as an Air Attack Pilot (aka Water Bombers). I left the CDF to work for Westair Airlines in Chico. Somewhere between flights, I met Suzanne, and we were married in DEC 1984. In 1985, I was hired by PSA, and based in SFO. In 1987, we moved to Modesto and built our first home while Suzanne was in college. PSA was bought by US Airways in 1987, and in 1992, after Suzanne graduated, we were transferred to Charlotte, NC. We left California nervous, excited...and pregnant! Chris may have been born in the Carolina's, but he was made in California (and no, none of us has developed a Southern accent). I am now a senior Captain and Check Airman with US Airways flying the Airbus 320. I work in the flight training department as a supervisor, instructor and evaluator. As a Check Airman, I train pilots new to the aircraft in addition to conducting simulator and flight evaluations for our current pilots. Besides spending considerable time in our flight simulators (think of a $30 million dollar full motion and sound XBOX), I also travel throughout North America while conducting operational line checks for our previously qualified Captains. It is nice that I'm afforded the chance each month to fly a 3 day trip as a normal line Captain without any Check Airman duties attached - it is a nice break from the intensity of the simulators and evaluations to step back a...Expand for more
nd spend a few days just have fun being Joe Pilot. It's no great surprise that of all the places I could go, I still request the SFO trip and layover where I bypass the crew hotel in the City and stay with my best friend and his family in Novato. I continue to serve as a volunteer firefighter, home owners association president and Boy Scout committee member. My family and I are also very active in our Church. We are still living in Tega Cay, SC on the shores of beautiful Lake Wylie, located just inside the NC/SC border and about 15 miles from Charlotte. Suzanne and I have been married for 24+ years, and our son Chris is now 16, an honor student and working on his Eagle Scout. He plans on becoming a Robotics Engineer. My current projects include building and flying radio controlled airplanes and helicopters while continuing my studies through Embry Riddle Aeronautical University with a degree in Aviation Safety and Aviation Law. My Spanish and Japanese are as bad as ever, but "Gambatte, Ne!" I still try and ride my Sea Doo as often as possible in my continuing quest to avoid any meaningful responsibility as much as possible. We have been blessed to travel to many exciting and beautiful places around the world, but Novato will always be my home, and SFO will always be my favorite city - I always get homesick each time I'm there! I'm sorry we missed the last reunion, but we hope to make the next one. I hope to be able to talk with those of you whom I still think of - you'd be surprised who you are, and the impact you've had on my life. Drop me a line sometime, and let me know how you are - I'd love to hear from you! I can be reached at "SODANE at JUNO dot COM" You can also see my FACE in the BOOK as well. Best wishes - - Shannon Davis
