Shari's Story

Live in Redwood City w/ my fiance; we marry this summer. I like photography, gardening, horticulture, geocaching, camping, hiking, travel, music, volunteerism, animals (especially dogs & rodents), board games, cultural events, social networking, blogging, lots more! For more info, read my answers to the other questions Classmates asks us. Or feel free to email me! :) At the time, high school was my world. Little things were big deals: having lots of friends (but it's quality that counts, not quantity), wearing cool clothes, getting asked to dance, wearing hair & makeup right, not getting laughed at in P.E., etc. When I think of most of my teen concerns, I chuckle. :) BTW, I was co-editor of the school newspaper & a yearbook staffer, but for some mysterious reason, Classmates doesn't give either of those as options in the "extracurricular" category. Enrolled at San Jose State: 1990. Graduated: '95. Major: journalism; minor: English. Didn't have much time for extracurriculars; I was busy working for Subway and, later, as a Spartan Daily writer/editor. I wish I'd belonged to more clubs. My fave class: Interpersonal Communications. I had neither the interest nor $ for the Greek System. I bought my 1st car while a student. I loved feeding the squirrels on campus. Anything else....? :) Worked at Subways in San Jose & Campbell in college. Before I graduated SJSU, I got a part-time job w/ Metro Newspapers, mainly in...Expand for more
its community weekly division. When I graduated, I became full-time. In 2001, one of Metro's co-publishers left to run Silicon Valley Community Newspapers. It now comprises 10+ community weeklies. I was a features editor & writer until Jan. '03, when I left, due to the burnout that can come after 8+ years at the same position. There were other factors that lead to my growing disenchantment as well, but I won't go into those. For 1.5 years, I served as editor of 2 community monthlies (Blossom Valley Times, Santa Teresa Times) in the San Jose-based Times Media Inc. Because my freelance career has finally blossomed, I stepped down from my editorship in July '05. I worked strictly as a freelance writer, editor & photographer until Sept. '06, when I took a job in retail to help pay my bills. However, in Nov. '06 I got my "dream job" as a casual proofreader for a healthcare magazine publishing group. I quit the retail job in March '07 because I was getting more time w/ the magazines. I eventually went from casual to part-time and also moved up to copy editor! :) I was laid off from that job, along with many others in editorial, in April 2009, due to the company restructuring in response to the poor economy. I'm now back to freelancing, unfortunately. I'm a freelance copy editor for an online publishing company and a freelance proofreader for the magazine publishing group that laid me off (long but cool story!)
