Sharlene's Story
Life
HmmÂ
.. I currently live in Corpus Christi Texas with my Âsignificant otherÂ. IÂm a high school teacher, because I like kids and the sound of my own voice. HA!!!!
I Joined the Navy as soon as I was legally able (18), after a year of college. It was not a good fit. I spent my first two years in the Philippines. Nothing makes you appreciate being an American than living in a developing country. It was pretty interesting, the nightclubs, the monkey meat on a stick (good stuff), the attack by monkeys at the chow hall, the coupe attempt, standing out in the jungle with an empty M-16 while the guy with the ammo is fifty yards away.
I spent three years in Guam. I would have stayed longer but they kicked me out. The Islanders are the nicest people youÂd ever want to meet. This was the only place I have ever been welcomed into a strangerÂs home and treated like family. Except for the typhoons I would go back there to live.
After Guam I spent three years in Seal Beach, California. The first couple of months were hard because I was used to nice people. Oh but the clubs were awesome. I loved the sunset strip, Venice beach, pretty much anything in Los Angles. ItÂs a good place to find yourself ;-).
The next stop was Misawa, Japan. It was the first time I had ever seen snow up to my neck. Getting up at 4 in the morning to driver the Kubota to clear the parking lot of snow was quite the experience. I liked it. There is a saying Âthere are three things to do in Japan, Âdrink, get a job or find...Expand for more
religionÂ, so I got a job and have had a second job ever since.
The final stop was Texas, Corpus Christi to be exact. It was close enough to Louisiana that if I needed to go home I could but not so close as to get unexpected guests. This was my first office job and what a boring job it was. Being a ÂMy girl Friday is definitely not my thing. Then I was transferred to Ingleside where I was stationed on a Minehunter as a Sonar tech/Mineman. It was my trip to Florida on this little boat that I decided that it was time to move on while I still had the courage. There is nothing worse than a military veteran after 20 working at Circle K.
I decided I wanted to be a probation officer. I like control and guns. I got my associates in Criminal Justice. My career decision changed after seeing the autopsy of a two year old baby girl abused by her parents. (I can still see her face). I realized that I could not have arrested these people without them having an accident on the way to the station. My instructor actually said the first day that in law enforcement if you have three options, Âget divorced several times, drink or eat your own gunÂ. Definite words of wisdom. While doing a pat down, my instructor suggested I become a teacher. So I transferred to A & M and got a BS in History. I realized that if you catch the kids before they needed a probation officer and let them know that they matter, it would be better for the kids and society as a whole. I teach World Geography at the high school level.
