Sharon's Story

Life Updated 4/18/08 Attended Auburn University 1976-1977. Moved back to B'ham and graduated from UAB in 1980. Married to Floyd Cox since 1979. Two children, Emily age 23 and Ben age 19. Currently live in Oak Mountain and work for a small employee benefits company nearby. Our house is at the top of a hill and we get to see lots of animals like deer, crows, racoons, possum, and tons of bluebirds. What would surprise everyone? Maybe that I'm still married to my first husband!! That seems to be a rarity these days. He's really a prize and I have been very blessed! I would love to see my first grade teacher Mrs. Watsaw, but I heard she died years ago so that's not possible. Hmmm... the wildest thing I ever did in school...well I wasn't really a wild person so that's hard to answer (and to remember) but I would have to say tearing Richard Hunter's coat in first grade while I was trying to give him a kiss, lol. I have no idea what happened to my first crush. We met in Panama City in 1972. I was 14 and he was 16. The last I knew of him he transferred from Georgia Tech to Auburn in the engineering department. He was from Anniston, so my Woodlawn friends never knew him. I hope my friends remember the good times we had in Band. When I look back, those were my fondest memories of Woodlawn. Riding on that bus, having Herbert Bolus carry the whole lot of us girls to the games in "Matilda", hot chocolate in the stands, stomping the bugs out of the ground during practice, freezing our buns off in the stands, and always wondering where Prince Charming was. Carl, I'm so sorry I hurt you, buddy. It reached the point where...Expand for more
I had to choose. By now I'm sure you have forgotten and/or forgiven me. I am truly happy now and have been for years. I'm still at home in Birmingham, working at a much less stressful job, and married to the greatest man in the world. My biggest surprize was when found out a kid who I had practically raised was using and selling drugs. That was my strictest rule, and until then I thought the world of him. How did I know what he was doing? It's funny how God shows you what He wants you to know. I saw him driving someone else's car on his way to make a drug trade. I NEVER drive on Parkway East, but that day I was right behind him. Then he almost hit another car; then a traffic light caught both of us and I got a clear view of him. I don't think I will ever get over that hurt, that betrayal of all the values I tried to teach him while he was in my household. I did what I had to do to get help for him, but he was such a good liar that he probably convinced his parents that I was mistaken. We don't communicate anymore and haven't for almost 2 years now, but I still pray for him every night and hope that God will put him back on the right road. Maybe he just needed an new guardian angel. Do-overs are not an option. We all make the best decisions we can and hope that we made the right choice. Everything happens in God's time and not necessarily when WE think something should happen. The wierdest "Job" I ever had was working in a church sponsored haunted house. My head had been severed and my job was to make my body flop around on the chopping block. Judging from the looks on people's faces, it was effective!
