Sharon's Story
Life
After graduation, I headed off to Ann Arbor where I eventually graduated with a BS in Nursing. Having had more than my share of Midwestern winters, I took the old sage's advice and headed west. (Okay, it was actually "Head West young MAN" -- but, hey, what was good for the guys...). I spent three and a half years in Phoenix, AZ before deciding I needed more shoreline than could be found around AZ's manmade lakes. I took a job at Stanford University Hospital and have been in Northern California ever since. I left hospital nursing and combined my nursing experience with my love for the legal aspects of medicine. My last corporate job was working for a large medical device company as a Government Relations Specialist (I had nothing to do with Clinton!). Basically, I tracked Healthcare Legislation - both state and federal -- and advised upper management on the impact said legislation would have on our company. It was a brand new position and I made it all up as I went along. ;^) I've been happily married for almost 13 years to an aerospace engineer (aka rocket scientist). We've adopted three wonderful cats before expanding our "family" by adopting something of a more human nature (two precious little girls).

the San Francisco Bay area. After getting Certified in Orthopaedics, I went to work on a Short Stay Unit. Having had a taste of weekends and Holidays off, I left hospital nursing when that unit was closed in 1992. I entered the world of Biotech when I took a job in Drug Safety at Syntex (USA) Inc. I stayed on as a consultant after the company was bought out by Roche Pharmaceuticals, finally being laid off in 1996. After my wedding, I went to work in Product Safety for Perclose, Inc., a very small, one-product medical device company. I was laid off again two years later and went to work for Varian Medical Systems. I was quickly promoted to create a position in Government Relations, tracking Health Care legislation and how it impacted the company. When that position was cut from the budget, I had already decided to become a stay-at-home Mom. I lasted less than a year before finding an RN position at an outpatient surgery center that would allow me to work only on the two days a week that the kids are in day care. Kept my hands in the profession and allowed me some adult conversation while still allowing me to spend a good chunk of time with the kids. Seven+ years later, I'm still scheduling my shifts around the girls'lives and frequent trips around the country. We're raising a couple of beach babies and constantly looking for someplace to get "sand between our toes."
