Sharon's Story
Life
Retired from the US Government in January, 1996-worked in the United States Public Health Service as a civilian nurse in Forensic Psychiatry-(mentally disturbed prisoners in Federal prisons or Washington, DC, prisoners) at the John Howard Pavilion. Best known for housing John Hinckley, (President Reagan's assassin), and Ezra Pound-World War II traitor. Also known as the site for the research on the CRIMINAL PERSONALITY by Drs Samuel Yochelson and Stanton Samenow. Two other hospitals house similar prisoner patients. The Medical Centers for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, MO and Rochester, MN.
After 20 years, I retired from Federal Law Enforcement-we were placed in this civil service category as we were responsible for the continued custody of the federal prisoner-patients. We were allowed to retire as early as age 50 with 20 years of duty completed.
While I was employed in PHS, I received two sustained superior performance awards. In 1976 I passed the ANA Psych-Mental Health Nursing Specialty Board Exams. I was one of the 15 nurses who passed the exam and who did not have a Masters or Doctorate. The other 285 who passed had graduate degrees. I understand that 1500 attempted the exam. Upon completion of this Exam, I received a letter of commendation from Faye G Abdellah, RN, EdD, ScD, FAAN, Chief Nurse Officer and Rear Admiral, USPHS.
After retirement, I worked part-time as a Psychiatric Nurse in local private hospitals in the Washington, DC area out of a psychiatric nursing agency.
In 2004, my left knee & right shoulder gave out and had total joint replacements done at Georgetown U School of Medicine. I go for physical therapy/fitness 2-3 Xs/week. Lately, my right knee apparently became jealous, and in October, 2009 the right knee will be replaced at Georgetown U.
I reside in Reston, Virginia-a new town close to the Dulles Airport. Reston is well-known for Hi Tech firms in the area-AOL--Oracle--Lockheed-Martin--Microsoft--Northrup-Grumman, etc., which handle government contracts. Reston was formerly the home of Virginia Gentleman Bourbon and the Fairfax Hunt Club. Real estate firms often said that each house in Reston had three taps! HOT, COLD and BOURBON!

n the street, next to Lake Fairfax. Steeplechase Races continued to be held in Reston through the early eighties, over tall timber! Six to seven feet of tall timber. Needless to say each race was held with Fairfax County ambulance squads waiting just off the race track. The races were made more colorful with the ridersÃÂÿ (average size ladies and gentlemen) silks from the breeders, and the attendance of VirginiaÃÂÿs best known farm, owned by Paul Mellon.
I keep busy with 3 Newfoundland dogs, 1 cat & Jerome. 2004 was a big year for Newfies! Josh won Best of Show at Westminster Kennel Club, and our local club (Colonial Newfoundland) had been busy with Louisiana Purchase/Lewis & Clark Expedition anniversary activities (the dog on the expedition was a Newfoundland named SEAMAN). There were activities held in Charlottesville, VA at Jefferson's home at Monticello.
I also manage my web site.
College

U of MN-College of Medical Sciences-BSN-1966
In 1968-69 summer sessions I obtained a USPHS traineeship in Community Mental Health at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City, with practicum at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital & at the New York State Psychiatric Institute.
I attended the Washington School of Psychiatry program in Mental Health Administration for two years--1977-'78 and received a CAGS. The Washington School of Psychiatry was founded by Harry Stack Sullivan in the 1930's and offers courses in clinical areas as well as Clinical Administration for Mental Health professionals in the Baltimore-Washington area.
The credits for this certificate were used by part of my joint degree program (MPA/MHA) at American U School of Public Affairs & Georgetown U School of Medicine/Community Medicine. I was graduated in 1982. As a part of my Graduate School curriculum, I also completed an Internship in Public Policy at the 1980-81 White House Conference on Aging. I assisted in the Health Care and Community Health committees. Two professors monitored this Internship, Anita Alpern, PhD, American University Professor, (former assistant commissioner for planning and research with the Internal Revenue Service), and Mary Starke Harper, RN, PhD, NIMH.
