Sharon's Story

Dear Classmates, This is my second attempt at my story. The first one left me feeling unsatisfied so I though I would try again. I have put a little about each school attended and what jumps into my memory as I write. Please forgive the vague nature of my writing. It has been over 40 years. So, to begin. . . From Lord Selkirk, I remember the candy store across the street. They had a soda fountain and everything. I treasure the memory of Miss Patricia Burt, my Grade 3 Teacher. She helped me when things at home were not so good. If you are very lucky, you get a teacher like her in your life. Memories of walking to school and cutting through back yards without worrying if I was going to get in trouble. Times have sure changed. I was in Vancouver and drove through the old neighbourhood. My house on Perry St is gone, I locked the car doors. Convent of the Sacred Heart was the best and worst time of my life. I never learned as much about myself as I did from the Nuns while living away from home and family. 13 is an awful age to be. Not a child and not grown up. Mother McLean, I hope you are roasting you know where now. Sacred Heart is now St. Georges. Boy, now where to they do their panty raids? Although I only did 2 1/2 years at "Happy Rock" I still have some fond memories. Very different from the Convent I attended 'til then( kicked out of the Convent for blowing up the Science lab. It really was an accident.) I remember the parties in Dougie Changs' basement. I remember that greaser, (yeah, I said it) Kathie Matuziak beating the crap out of me and leaving me a bloody mess in the Girls locker room because she though I called her a dog. Mr Dobson, the badminton coach had to drive me home. I remember the guidance counselor Miss Wilson telling me I would never amount to much. Hah! The old bag got it wrong. Maybe it was intended as motivational. I remember balling my eyes out at year end when the grade 12s' graduated. From DT, I remember my '73MGB and the ...Expand for more
best ever 16th BD party. 200 people in the house on Perry Street and not one thing broken. I think it helped that Dave Cresswell was the doorman. I also remember clogs. I always wore clogs.. .and knickers. I had to take the clogs off to drive. Sad. Really, really sad. I never figured out why I was called Ralph. Maybe someone can finally explain it to me? Did I throw up a lot? Did folks think I was gay? The 'ralphing' after parties, I admit to but they gay thing is just hilarious. My fondest memory from DT is of the Whistler trip. Who was it that ended up underwater in the puddle when we were walking back to our cabin that night? Shirley Drebot, I think. Trojans' Rugby games where I screamed myself hoarse in the rain are also up there in the fond memory category. AC's Mustang was too cool. I had a huge crush on Sherry MacCaulys' older brother Steve. Larry Stone was a crush too. Because I worked in the family business, I lost touch with most of my friends from High School. After 20 years in the business, I went back to school for my BA and CGA. Who knew I was such a geek? I write and sell accounting software all across the country. It's great. I get to work in my PJ's if I want and can also travel because everything is online. Never met Mr. Right but came close a couple of times. I'm from the generation where we like to be married before we had kids so, that's a no go too. Ah well, the life of a middle age, post menopausal woman with means ain't too bad if I think about it. I could be a lot worse off. I joined the site because it's almost 40 years since High School. I was wondering if a reunion is in the works for Gladstone or David Thompson? ' Does anyone know what happened to Ana Cibelli or Shirley (Goose) Drebot? I see a few familiar names and looking at all these names has brought back some great memories. So, that's it for me folks. Hope you enjoyed reading my story. Did I share too much? Are you groaning or did I jog a few memories of your own?
