sharon burkett:

CLASS OF 1965

sharon's Story

Fifty years (really 49) is a long time to summarize in a short (?) profile. Personally, I married Glen Burkett in 1969 (Denby 64) and we have two children, Emily (40) and Jeremy (36) who brought spouses Jeff and Melanie into the family and then four grandchildren - Brendon (6), Sophia (3), Betty (2) and Alice (2 mos.). Emily and Jeff live in Portland, OR and Jeremy and Melanie live thankfully in Canton, MI. Education-wise, I graduated from Wayne State in 1969 (German). After much time and deliberation I went back to school in Occupational Therapy and graduated in 1984, the beginning of a whole new career. My field of choice was psychiatry and I worked in 3 different settings over my 25 years in the field - Samaritan Health Center, Cottage Hospital and finally at Wayne State on a 6 bed neuropsychiatric research unit - retired from there in 2009. I spent half my life at WSU - two different degrees and two totally different jobs! My work as an OT was extremely challenging and rewarding - I loved it. I feel I learned way more from my patients than they did from me. After Glen retired from the Detroit Public Schools (Finney HS) with 30 years in we started an "estate sal...Expand for more
e" business in Grosse Pointe - Rainbow Estate Sales which was a very fascinating and educational experience. We retired about 3 years ago from that, wanting to spend more time during the summer at Stag Island. We have gone to Florida (Manasota Key) for the past four years for 6 weeks to escape the cold Michigan winters. I now spend my time crafting and seeking treasures for a small antiques and crafts booth I have in the area. I have joined NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and am pretty active at our church in Grosse Pointe. The grandchildren keep us busy following their activities and we are over the moon with their little personalities! Our family life has had its share of ups and downs as most do but we persevere and look forward to many more years of family fun and adventures. I am super excited to reconnect with Denby classmates, after all we went through a lot together, good and bad. Looking forward to seeing you all at our 50th, gulp, class reunion next October. It is so sad that so many of our class have passed away so young. But It is amazing that so many of us will hopefully be together to share our life stories. Can't wait to see you all there.
