Sharon's Story
Here's my story, for all my old friends, acquaintances, and anyone who wants to know. Simple as I can make the last 40 some odd years...more to follow sometime after I figure out how to clone myself...kidding.
For those of you RHS class of '71 graduates who wonder who I am, and didn't know me from either the Village School or the Junior High, it's because I went away to boarding school in NH.
Skipped my freshman year up there, so would have been class of '70...had I actually graduated, which I didn't; something about money/costs...I don't remember. Yes, that's right...I was a high school dropout!
Anyway, when I came back to RHS, they took one look at my classical education from the (non-Regent classes) Waldorf boarding school, and wanted to put me back as a sophomore, after I'd completed my sophomore and junior years up in NH, had read the classics, was fluent in French, etc., etc...so I quit (got my G.E.D. at 18) and started working in the city, for one of the biggest press agents on Broadway.
I got paid nearly nothing for answering the phones and making the appointments, but wow, what a great experience. Talk about being spoiled; I had the best seats in the house every nite of the week for free...what a treat. I flipped out the first time I actually had to pay!
I worked for several years as a secretary/administrative assistant (still don't admit that I ever knew shorthand...the typing's hard to keep secret) before I worked my way into being a fully matriculated student at St. John's, where I did my first two years as a chemistry major. Started in '76.
Got married in '78, had my son in '79, took four years off to be a Mama, then got my B.S. in pharmacy in '85. Got separated in '84 and divorced in '86. Went right into working the M.A.S.H. units in hospital practice for years until I burned out...between the shift work, being a single mom, and being on the code and trauma teams, covering ...Expand for more
mostly the critical care areas, I "retired" into law school...again at St. John's.
Loved that so much I did it two and half years and graduated in '94. That taught me never to do anything to please a parent (daddy's wish) no matter how easy they make it. He was gracious enough to pay for it all.
Did community, charity, pro-bono work only as a lawyer because I didn't have to earn an income at that time. Was on the planning board in Oyster Bay Cove (where I then lived). Worked as a volunteer advocate for HIV positive and AIDS patients, was involved in local Nassau Co. politics peripherally, probated a few wills, negotiated a few deals, etc., etc. Not what I was meant to do.
Fast forward to today; I am a compounding pharmacist with a practice in the city on the Upper East Side. I do mostly bio-identical hormone replacement work with male and female patients, and a lot of nutritional consulting.
They call me the Witch Doctor, or the Voodoo Woman, or the anti-pharmacist at work (to my face), but I am happy to help anyone and everyone when they come to me for help, which I'm honoured to say they do.
After two years of almost never unpacking a suitcase, I can proudly say that I now have more letters after my name than in it! I am a Diplomate of the American Board of Anti-Aging Health Practitioners, and an Advanced Fellow in functional, regenerative and anti-aging medicine; fellowship from the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.
That makes me Sharon G. Thompson, R.Ph., J.D., FAAAM, Diplomate ABAAHP. Not too shabby for a high school dropout.
All kidding aside, what I really am is living proof to anyone who thinks they can't overcome the difficulties life throws in their paths that, if you put your "heart and nerve and sinew" to what you dream of, you can overcome the obstacles and make it happen. I am the poster girl for "you can make it happen if you really want to".
Peace,
Sharon
