Shawnette's Story
Life
Where to start, I have been married for 30 years to someone I knew in elementary school. We live in Yellowknife have been for 25 years and love it. After being the gm at the Yellowknife INN for about 6 years we decided to become foster parents. It is the best and hardest job I have ever had.
Well after high school and what can I say, I did what I did and then grew up. Never regret the past. It makes us who we are.
I became an animal activist, we have cats, dogs, birds, fish, degus, hampsters. I got in a whole bunch of trouble saving animals but really who cares what other people think, I don't lose any sleep. The NWT is the place to be for the wildlife, you can go out of town to watch the bison on the road. Red fox come into you back yard and aren't afraid of people. Ptarmigans are birds, they call them ptarmachickens, they come right up to the front door and from what I hear mighty tasty. Taste like chicken!
The first year we were here the temp went down to -65C. Then you can look forward to the 24 hour sun, not me hate the heat love the cold. Some people don't look forward to the 24 hour dark. The one thing I do miss about Nova Scotia is salt water smell. Not to mention family, I lost my mom a few years ago to cancer she was 49 when she died, I made it back before she died but as people become older and being 12 hours away it gets a little scary. everyone asks if we will ever come back to Nova Scotia, when I die I will be back.
Foster parenting, we can have up to 6 kids at a time. Right now we have 8, 5 girls and 3 boys. Twins g...Expand for more
irls that are 8 their sister 9 and a teenager who just turned 17 and just had a baby to which I am nana, a little girl who will turn 2 and a little boy who is 10 months not to mention our 5 year old who we will be adopting and oh my god, what days we have. I wouldn't change a day good or bad.
Fetal alcohol spectrum happens quite a bit up here, lots of drugs and lots of alcoholism. The older kids and the ones with special needs get left behind and sometimes forgotten. I hope that James and I can at least give them what they need. Can't save the world is what we hear quite a bit, don't want to just want to save the ones that we have at the time.. There are still dry communities, it is a social issue that sometimes we lose.
I found out a long time ago that I couldn't have kids of my own, so after some time of trying all the science stuff. We decided that this is the road we have to travel. I haven't regretted a moment. James doesn't either.
To see a child come into your home scared, hurt and angry and then watch them grow happy, confident and somewhat healed. They have a long way to go to be healed, we're just here to help. We are the band aid. I know I'm getting old b/c tears spring to my eyes so much more easy now. These kids are broken some can be fixed a lot can't.
I mentor young girls on the road to no where, sometimes it turns out good and sometimes you either go to a funeral, the hospital or visit the jail. I wish I kept in touch with friends, I wish more I didn't judge the ones I should have taken the time to talk to.
Well that's it for now.
