Shayai's Story
Life
I am currently a student at the University of New Mexico (UNM). I have taken a year off for my bachelor's degree for a year long study of Traditional Mexican Healing. The classes are great and I have become a healthier person because of it.
In 2004, I gave birth to my first son, Kaweshchima. I was lucky enough to have my son born on February 29th! He's a leap year baby! He is such a wonderful gift and I thank our creator for him everyday!
In 2003, I was traditionally married to Aaron who is now a professor of Art History at UNM. We now live in Laguna - actually next door to my parents! Aaron is Cherokee/Chickasaw Native American from Oklahoma and we travel around the area going to powwows and ceremonies.
In 1997, I was crowned the 14th Miss Indian World. My position was to be a cultural and goodwill ambassador in representing all indigenous people of the world. I traveled across the US, Japan and Mexico as Miss Indian World.
School

Club and involved in a variety of clubs on campus. My best friend through high school was Alison Porath -- who I still keep in contact with. Many of you from high school probably do not remember me, but because I was in Yearbook -- I remember who you are.
College
I was at NM Tech for four years before funds suddenly ran low. I was 19 hours away from my degree in Biology/Pre-Med. I haven't returned to Tech except for 49'ers (a couple of times).
I returned to NM Tech, pregnant, for one semester and fled north to Albuquerque. Haha! Right now I am currently a student at University of New Mexico where I am studying Traditional Mexican Healing. The program is awesome and as for next year (2006), we'll see where I'll be headed.
Workplace
I am working part-time with the ACL WIC office as a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor. I love the work I do in helping mothers overcome concerns and situations they may have regarding breastfeeding. I get to see new babies! The work I do may not be in the limelight, but I love it nonetheless! I am happy to be able to in a way raise the children of Acoma, Laguna and Canoncito communities.
