Michele's Story

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! 2008 As I sit among wrapping paper, tape, packages, and bows, I realize that Christmas is just around the corner and I really need to get our cards out in the mail¿so here is my quick attempt to catch everyone up on our lives of the past year. We are all doing very well, with the typical house full of growing children: Kylah (my niece) is 19; Jared, Holly-Anne and Derek are 10 and lastly Ava and Colin who will soon turn seven in January. They are all growing into their own personalities, their own friends, and their own likes and dislikes. Each one of them is wonderful in their own special way, and they make me very proud. We also have our two cats, Magic and Star and two fish (from the original eight :-)). Kylah had a big event this year...she got her drivers license! I do not see her nearly as much as I used to, now it's "can I borrow the car?" She started working at the YMCA, they really like her and are constantly calling to see if she can work more hours. Kylah also starts college in January and Aunt Michele has started paying tuition on a ¿long¿ payment plan! She has been dating someone special for almost a year, and has met some great girlfriends too, so although she is growing up she still has sleepovers and long conversations on the phone. If I need anything technical fixed, she is the one to do it, she is very smart and is a whiz at figuring things out (I do not even try anymore, I defer to her) quickly. Kylah spends a lot of time with her cousins and takes them to many fun places: the zoo, museums, parks, the pool and library to name a few. She is looking forward to an exciting year ahead! Jared of course has been very busy with sports. In the beginning of the year, his basketball team was first runner up in the Championship, and then his baseball team won the Championship, so it was a very exciting start. He then started swim team, his 5th year, excelling in breast stroke again but picking up the butterfly stroke and individual medley-which are very hard but just the challenge he wants. While still dripping, he strapped on his football helmet and started his 3rd year in tackle football. Jared did very well as Captain of the team, the Center and a linebacker; he played every game, the entire game. He executed some amazing plays, which had fans and parents screaming his name, which was a new and exhilarating feeling! After getting his front chipped tooth fixed for the fourth time, we entered into basketball season again where he continues to show his leadership skills. Jared loves to play video games; he excels in school and also took drum and viola lessons. He looks after his siblings as if he is the oldest and truly has the sweetest heart under that tough exterior. As his football coach said while presenting Jared with the All-Around MVP award, ¿he always has a smile on his face!¿ Holly-Anne, I can ¿really¿ say she has changed...boy has she gotten tall! She was always tall for her age (the tallest in her class), but she has shot up, wears my shoes now and her legs and arms seem to go on forever. Holly is beautiful, she finally cut her waist length hair as she now wanted layers ¿all her friends do¿¿¿come on Mom pleeeaasssee!¿ She too has been very busy with her sports, softball in the spring, which they ended as one of the playoff teams (they do not have a championship game), then right into swim team, her 5th year as well, and she dominated in the breast stroke. And while she was still very, very dark from her days of swimming, she transitioned into her 3rd year of cheerleading. Holly-Anne is a voracious reader, to the point where her teachers have had to ask her to ¿stop¿ reading at times! She is a very good student, also artistic, involved in Girl Scouts for the 4th year, and is up to date on all the tween stars, style and music. She has many sleepovers and seems to be a social butterfly in a whirl. Whereas last winter Holly-Anne played volleyball, this season we all felt ¿she must play basketball¿, it would be a shame not to with her beautiful height and she is good! Her best friend Kristina also plays on the team with her Dad as the teams Assistant Coach, so it should be a very fun season! Derek is just such a pleasure, a gorgeous smile to light up any room; he is a favorite of his teacher, friends and friend¿s parents! He makes an effort to always do the right thing, is very easy going, and a pleaser. Derek is very creative, enthusiastic and a bit of a daydreamer. However, even with the daydreaming he is getting very high grades and took on guitar this year. His artwork draws the attention of everyone, and his school framed one of his works from this year. He is a very confident child and seems to have more friends then I can count, he was the Mascot of our football team this year and I had to tell the cheerleaders to leave him alone as they were...Expand for more
causing too much distraction. Derek also¿is very good in athletics; he too started the year with his basketball team winning the Championship (he and Jared were on different teams), then rocked into baseball in which they won the Championship and then on to dive team. After 4 years on swim team, Derek wanted to dive, and I felt that would be perfect as it is also an artistic sport. He did well and is looking forward to next year already! And I should say¿ ¿While he was still barefoot¿ (as he never wore shoes in the summer) he started training to be the Herndon Hornets Youth League¿s first ever Mascot, he was a huge hit! Derek is very involved in Boy Scouts and got to go away to camp this summer (Goshen) for a whole week, he loved it! Now he too is moving into basketball season and has a great outside shot! Colin-Michael is my mischievous one, a grin to mask what he has been up to with a laugh that reminds you of your own childhood. He has this great talent of creating and figuring out how things work. A day does not go by that he has not built or found something that has entranced him. Colin loves his cats, video games (jams on Guitar Hero), the trampoline and his scooter. Like the rest of his siblings, he has many friends and went on his first sleepover this year. Ava and Colin are close, play together often, and share many of the same friends. He is very happy being with his best friend, Caleb in class this year. Colin does very well in math, and the teacher says ¿all the little girls love him¿ (am I sensing a trend here??) In the spring, Colin played flag football with his sister Ava, and their team won the Championship! What a year for championships! He then started off the summer with the dive team too, after being on the swim team for 2 years prior. However, by the end of the season he was doing dive AND swim team because he decided he missed swimming. He was our number one fan this fall season, as I coached cheerleading again and the other four kids were on teams. Now he is very interested in starting hip-hop classes, you would not believe how good he is¿.did you ever wonder how people started dancing in videos, must be like this¿ Ava-Grace is very pretty, with an ¿all American look¿, sweet and funny with a great air of confidence. Already she is into style, boys (seemingly, every boy likes her, at least according to her ¿), art and her ¿Mom¿. Ava feels like my other half, most likely because she is always laying with me, sleeping with me, holding me or sitting on me. Not that I mind, I love it because she is my last ¿baby¿. She is very artistic and can do more then just draw; she can do 3 D art, paint and create things. Ava¿s classmates tell her that she is the¿ best drawer in her class.¿ She started Brownies this year after being a Daisy last year. In addition, of course she started her athletic year winning the Championship with Colin, for flag football! She was a better player then most of the kids and the only girl on the team! She then moved into swim team, for the 3rd year and did extremely well in back stroke and free style with her winning first place numerous times, taking home many blue ribbons! She has the same style as her brother Jared, and they are both very competitive in the water. This happy one ¿skipped¿ into cheerleading for her first year, and had a very good time with her teammates, she perfected a handstand with one knee bent and the other leg/toe pointed! Ava looks up to her big sister, Holly (to the chagrin of Holly) and loved being on the squad with her this year. Now she is taking a break, but will be gearing up for soccer in the spring. Well that is it for the kids, and as for me, I started a new job this year as the Manager of Operations for a high tech company and absolutely LOVE IT! I really like what they do, and they are very successful with a huge future. I love the people, what my job is, my office, my commute, but best of all I get home between 4:30 and 5:00 and get to see my kids so much more. I ran a few smaller races (The George Washington Classic) this year, but on May 31, 2009, I will be competing in the Black Bear Triathlon at Beltzville State Park in PA. The race is in the beautiful and challenging Mountains of the Poconos. We are going to make a family vacation out of it, with plans to go white water rafting, visit a great water park and hit the white beaches of the lake. Wish me luck! I coached cheerleading again this year and was on the Board of Directors as Head of Publicity for HOYC, but I am thinking of taking next year off. Moreover, that nagging feeling to go back to graduate school is starting within me again; my last graduate class was demanding¿.so we will see! I feel blessed to have such a great family and wonderful friends! We hope you are all are healthy and happy! Love, Michele, Holly-Anne, Jared, Ava, Derek & Colin and Kylah.
