Sherilyn's Story

Life Hi, fellow classmates! I'm sure many of you have thought I'd dropped off the face of the earth; but I've simply been very busy between my Air Force career and married life, in which Mark and I celebrated our 25th anniversary in Oct 2010. Now that I'm retired (Captain) I have a little more time, but not a lot, because I enjoy many voluntary activities; namely, singing in my Church's Sanctuary Choir (our choir alone is 100 members strong and last year we were invited to go on tour throughout Scotland and England at many of the Cathedrals and abbeys there) On our last day before returning home, we were in London and literally two blocks from where the bus was blown up, in additon to the other bombings thruout the city. So I sort of have an idea of what NYC went thru on 9/11. My husband was a Senior Federal Agent with U.S. Customs, and obviously had more than his share of stress. My years in the Air Force (1979 - 1990) were among the best in my life. My main career field ended up as a Protocol Officer, and I had the honor and priviledge to meet the very top of the list of VIPs. When I was stationed at Vandenberg AFB, near Santa Barbara, CA, in the '80s, I provided protocol support from anyone from President and Nancy Reagan at his "Western White House", to escorting many VIPs, elected officials, and countless general or flag-ranking officers. My all time favorite experience is when I got to plan the visit and escort Charlton and Mrs Heston (my all time favorite actor). And I was at Vandenberg at a very exciting time: the first launches of the MX missile, to the development of the Western Launch Site of the Space Shuttle. I was transferred to Maxwell AFB, AL, as Chief of Protocol in the Fall of 1985. Of course just a few short months after this, the Challenger Disaster occurred, which changed the dyna...Expand for more
mics of the Space Shuttle program permanently. Fast-forward to Dec 1990, now that I was retired, I joined my husband in El Paso Texas, where we lived for 10 years. In Dec 2000, my husband was offered a promotion and transfer to Seattle, and since he's born and raised in Seattle and still has family nearby (unlike myself, who's family is spread all over the country!), we took the assignment and moved to Washington in Jan 2001. Of course the events of 9/11 have changed all of our lives in many ways. We found a wonderful home in a quaint port town of now 11,000. My husband retired from Homeland Security (DHS) in 2008 but is active with church and community organizations. I've added to my activities list as an advocate of the Alzheimer's Association and many charitable military organizations, such as the Wounded Warrior project. We're settled and are enjoying our lives with our "kids": A Great Dane, Austrailian Shepard, Great Pyrnanese, and a Boxer! They're a handful! I'm willing to help plan a reunion, tho it'll be long distance, from Washington State! But now us "old middle aged folk" have like e-mail, social networking, and cell phones, right? Right!! So if there are any of you out there that would like to join this effort, please let me know. The key is planning a location early enough, before everything's full. I know all Center's Class of 74 and 75, as well as all of the KCMO community, will always remember the horrible accident of Pat Bickle in a Home Football game when Pat suffered a life- changing neck injury. The way the entire KC community rallied to support Pat, including holding a fundraiser at the brand new Arrowhead Stadium, was a true inspiration for all of us. We all miss Pat now, but he will always hold a place in our hearts and our school's "Hall of Fame!" Regards, Sheri Dreger Miller
