Sherman's Story
After graduating from HS, I went to Monmouth College for one year before I was drafted in 1966. I went through combat medics training and ended up a combat medic in Vietnam with the 4th Inf. Division and then the 71st Evac Hospital.
After the service, I finished my undergrad work at Monmouth College, completed a double MS and most of my Ph.D. at U of Iowa in Environmental Management.
After school, I took a job in Chicago as an environmental scientist for Fluor Corporation, one of the 3 largest engineering and construction firms in the world. My responsibility was performing environmental impact assessments for large energy related projects. I lived in Chicago for 10 years.
In 1982 I moved Irvine CA for Fluor Corp. Shortly after moving to Irvine I met and married my wife, Diane. Diane had an 8-year-old daughter named Summer.
I left Flour in 1987 to start up and manage an office for an environmental consulting firm (ENSR). I was with them for 6 years.
In 1994 I joined my current firm (Chambers Group, Inc.) as Executive VP and Chief Operating Officer. Three years later we purchased the majority share from the retiring owner. I am the President and Chief Operating Officer for the company.
Chambers specializes in marine and terrestrial biology, archeology and environmental planning. We have about 125 staff in five offices in Southern California (Irvine, San Diego, , Redlands, Imperial Valley, and Los Angeles) and an office in Seattle, WA.
Diane merged her firm with a larger firm and retired in 2016. Before retiring she was the name and managing partner for Law Offices of SmithTrager. They had 10 attorneys and three offices, one in the Bay Area, one in Irvine and one in Newport Beach. Their specialty is in co...Expand for more
nstruction and engineering law and environmental law. Diane also pratices international construction law and has several interesting clients in Europe, South America and the Middle East.
Our daughter received her law degree from Boston University and her MS in Environmental Engineering from University of California at Berkely. She opened her own firm last year and specializes in environmental law.
For vacations, Diane and I both enjoy SCUBA diving. We both have over 2000 dives world wide. Our favorite dive sites are:Palau, Solomon Islands, Norther Sulawesi, the Komodo Islands in Indonesia, and the northern islands of Fiji. We are also very avid snow skiers but had to give it up several years ago.
Our favorite places in the whole world are Hoi An, Vietnam and Bali. We visit each one at least once a year. We dive in Indonesia at least a couple times a year and we spend a few days in Bali to break up the trip and get acclimated to the new time zone.
UPDATE: 2016
Several notable things have happened since the last post.
I sold my business to the employees under an ESOP arrangement. I have a three year contract but am no longer the President/CEO (thank God). I work a few hours a day and go on vacation frequently.
We still go to Bali regularly and have gone to Vietnam for the past 6 years. It took Diane 40 years to get me back there, and I am glad she did. When I was there the first time, I had no opportunity to eat the local foods, since going back I have become a serious affectionado of their cuisine.
We still are avid divers and most of our diving is in Indonesia. It is the best diving in the world by far. We had to give us skiing :-( because of Diane's arthritis. We both miss it, but what can you do.
