Sherry's Story
Hi old friends,
I left Stapleton with dreams of becoming a missionary. After two years of missions training, I reluctantly started teacher training at the request of loved ones who knew me better than I knew myself. They were right about me, after 15 minutes (literally) of education classes, I knew I'd found my place in this world. I have been blessed to be an educator and to have also done missionary work both here and abroad.
My family moved from Stapleton less than a year after we all graduated, so our paths have seldom crossed since, except in the case of my closest friends who attended my wedding. I married in '86. Yea, I know...I was barely out of High School! My husband, George, was from Chicago. Imagine the thrill of a rural NE girl gettin' hitched to a city boy. We've been married 21 years as of this writing.
We have three children. Our firstborn is a freshman in college. She just got back from a missions trip to Chile. Her sister, our secondborn, is a sophomore in High School. She is also involved in missions through her youth group. They made a trip to Mexico recently. It was hilarious listening to stories of my little diva's complaints about no cell service over the border being hushed by the sight of shanties and poorly clothed children mere yards from the homeland.
Our youngest, a boy, is ...Expand for more
in the 7th grade. He defies any normal introduction, being both gifted and learning disabled. He is brilliant one moment and makes my eyes roll the next, but how I love him. He will probably outshine us all in the end:)
We have lived in AZ for almost 8 years. We came here from the Northern Marianna Islands, where we both taught in an international school and helped in a little multi-cultural church. Our life here in AZ is not much different. I teach at an elementary school. George minister's to a thriving congregation. We both enjoy being part of this rural, multi-cultural community, though our hearts still draw us away to other parts of the world to share God's love and eternal hope. This summer we are going to Rome. I've never been and am quite excited, though the trip will be exhausting.
For those of you who remember my parents, they are missionaries in the Philippines. My brother Mike, a tile-layer/contractor, lives in NC with his wife and three children. Dale, a computer programer, lives in MN with his wife and four children. Kevin, a jack of all trades, lives in CA. Kenneth works with my parents in the PI.
I often think of you all. I've shown our class book to my children and reminisced about my short but full years in the NE sandhills where folks are stout in character and heart.
God bless you all!
