Shirley's Story
Life
After graduation in 1956, I joined the Army (WACS). I was sent to Fort Knox for Radio School, but when I got there, they decided they didn't need women because the only ones going to the front lines were nurses. I was then trained at the Ireland Army Hospital at Fort Knox as a Medic. I met my husband, got married in 1960 and began 34 years of raising seven children. After the children left home, I went to college and received a degree in Early Children Education. For 10 years I worked with Head Start and retired in 2006. I have 12 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one due in September, 2007. I have had a good life as possible married for 47 years to the same man.
I met my husband in the Fall of 1959; he was riding a Harley in full garb. He looked like Elvis and I fell in love immediately. At the time I was working in a restaurant, he asked for a glass of MILK, left me a $5 tip for the milk. Then milk was 15 cents. I was hooked! He was a country boy and I a city girl. othing in common. He liked fishing and hunting; I like partying and dancing. He liked country music; I liked rock & roll. We went to a dance where country music was playing. It was there that I saw Patsy Cline, Roy Clark, Jimmy Dean, and several others. The interesting part is, these singers were not so famous then, and lived close by.
Now my music encompasses all forms and sounds. In my opinion, it is a good way to express oneself. I can still dance, but not sing.
I always wanted to be a nurse when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were almost right.
My first job was at Bell Telephone Co, where I got paid $1.00 an hour to be an operator. What I remember most about it is the times I cut off people during their phone calls..
The first month of first grade at Lincoln Elementary, I spent sitting in the corner. I yelled out that I came to do school work not listen to stories. First grade is a lot different these days; the kids realy do work!
