Shirley's Story
High school was a very awkward time for me. I was very quiet and boring, didn't date or even go out with friends because I lived far away (in Cicero). I view my high school years as having been in a coma. After high school, I enrolled in Nursing School and graduated in 1971. Nursing school thankfully changed that quiet behavior for me. Maybe having the dorm located in a convent had something to do with it.
The wildest thing that I ever did in high school was to cut all of my classes (with a friend whom I will not mention) but did not leave the school so that every student and teacher saw us even though we did not attend any classes. we found it amusing to see so many with a look of confusion on their faces when we were seen walking in the halls!
I married in 1971, divorced in 1973, remarried in 1977. In 1982 I left the nursing profession to begin to raise a family of four daughters. I do remain close to my four daughters who live nearby.
My work experience began with a ten year employment in intensive care at Northwestern Memori...Expand for more
al Hospital. During that time I obtained a baccalaureate in nursing from DePaul University in 1979. In 1994 I earned a Masters degree in Nursing and taught in a school of nursing for a short period of time.
My interests at home are the usual sewing, quilting, needlepoint. I absolutely detest cooking and classical music, but I love animals. I have had many but especially love horses. Right now I have a macaw, a guinea pig, two frogs, fish, parakeets, two dogs and I still weekly ride the horse that I used to own at a local disability riding center.
In 1999 I injured my shoulders after a fall off a horse followed by an auto accident five months later which began a series of seven shoulder operations that left me disabled from the nursing profession. I am now an empty nester trying to find a way to manage my disability and work.
The only thing that I would like to change is having to loose the weight that I gained when I was ill. Having never been overweight until now, I am overwhelmed with how incredibly difficult this task is.
