Shirley's Story
After graduating from Lowell State, I worked in Boston for short time then volunteered with the Tom Dooley Fdt, (69-70) for 18 months, in Laos. There I found many new reasons to support our troops in Vietnam.
After returning to States, moved to Connecticut where I worked twoards my Masters in Clinical Micro, while working for private lab. Later I chahged jobs to work with Norwich PU in Water/Wastewater and obtained a Masters in Env, Sc.
1986 I again left my career to join Mercy Ships. I have been with Mercy Ships for over 32 years, living 8 years on board the M/V Anastasis. I have served/worked in over 20 countries in Africa, Europe, South and Central Ame...Expand for more
rica and the Caribbean.
I now work in East Texas at our International Operations and Support Center. I did get to travel to the Africa Mercy in Cameroon , West Africa for a week. There I spent time teaching and training our on-board water-men responsible for treating the local water for ship use,
Not a simple task since we have a crew of 450 and patients ...the water has to be safe, and because of quality of different port water supplies, a variation at each country.
Hopefully I will get to return this fall or falling spring to Guinea. Then when our new ship, presently being built (Global Mercy), I hope to get to go on-board her for a couple of weeks.
