Shirley's Story

Life My class graduated may 1960..but I was not there...my life had taken a turn and I ended up a mother by age 18..Married and moved away...I was a mother for the second child by age 19...I then started to realize I had no future and my children had no future unless I changed my life... I got my GED.. when my oldest was starting kindergarden..mom was starting nursing school..I graduated from lpn school and went into the work force.I worked while my children were growing up but sadly this marriage ended in divorce...14 years had come and gone so quickly...so here we were again facing poverty on a single moms salary...I knew if I went back to school and got a degree in nursing I could provide better for my children so through the place I worked I went to Midway College and working and going to school it took me 4 years to earn an associate degree in nursing but that was ok...my income went up and I was better able to provide for myself and my family..but I wasnt done yet I had the chance of my life and it was to go to Emory Unive...Expand for more
rsity in Atlanta and prepare to be a nurse practitioner... this was very hard for me ..I was from a small town and never been very many places.I was homesick and ask myself "why are you doing this"? this took me another year plus...I passed the test to recieve my license on the first try and was so thankful...my children are now grown with children of thier own and they have never complained about what they didnt have while growing up but I am quite sure they remember the hard times. So the moral to this story is ..you can do anything you want to do if you set your mind to it....I am living proof.I am not complaing about my life because god gave me two wonderful children and three beautiful grandchildren and I am so thankful....I dont know the accomplishments of any of those i would have graduated with..altho I would really be interested in thier stories.I have no wealth too speak of but my home is comfortable and I drive a nice car and I am in relatively good health..my children have been successful ..what more could I ask for??
