Sid's Story

Life I attended SUNY Brockport & earned two degrees there, both in English. My original intent was to become a HS English teacher, but I ended up just drifting around until I entered graduate school a couple of years later. I knew then that I wanted to write, but mainly poetry. The best alternative seemed to earn advanced degrees & become a college teacher, which would afford me the freedom to write. With that in mind, I came to the U. of Maryland, College Park to work on my Ph.D. I have lived in the DC area ever since & have taught in various local colleges. My years & the people I knew at Brockport remain deep in my heart, however. I grew up in some important ways there. Recently, I spent 18 years at The George Washington University on year-to-year contracts. My position got caught up in a program change & rather than seek employment in the new program, I decided to try retirement. I love retirement. I am getting by financially & have a ton of time to myself. Throughout the years my main goal was to make myself into a "publishable poet", a poet whose work is respected by other poets & by experienced readers of poetry. After years of hard work-the usual trials & tribulations-my book "Working Vocabulary" was published by a well-regarded local literary press, The Washington Writers' Publishing House. Since then I have become one of the people involved in WWPH's operation. To back-track a little, if you knew me at all at Forest Hills, you knew that I moved to the neighborhood from The Bronx a couple of months into my sophomore year & that I did not particularly enjoy living in Forest Hills or attending FHHS. I never recovered from the culture shock even though both neighborhoods were Jewish. Shortly after I graduated, my mother moved to the Upper West Side in Manhattan, a neighborhood I enjoyed very much. While at FHHS I began playing a lot of basketball, probably as an escape, although I really possess very little natural athletic ability. I still play b-ball to this very day, though not as much as I should. Over the years, I've met many players & coaches, & have formed some lasting friendships. In my 20s I began listening to jazz & for a while was something of a fanatic. I've met many friends among fellow listeners & players in the DC area. I never had a lot of money & never did some of the things more money would have made possible, but I got by & compared to a lot of people I had a lot of time to myself, which I found to be a necessity. I had a number of relationships & met a few women with whom marriage seemed a real possibility. For better or worse, that never happened. On the one hand, I would have liked to have had a familly, but on the other hand, I am something of a loner. If anyone I knew in The Bronx, FHHS, or SUNY Brockport wants to get in touch, I'd love to hear from you. Finally, I hope everyone out there is doing well & has had good life. The best is yet to come. The following information was added in April 2010 in an effort to remain current. A few important events have occurred since my earlier profile. First, my last remaining close relative from my parents' generation, my father's sister, passed away in early '09 in her apt. in Manhattan. She was 93 & was an interesting enough lady to be the subject of a feature article in the NY Times in September '04. Around the time of her passing I learned that I had a malignant mass, a lymphoma, in my neck right under the left side of my jaw. I began receiving b...Expand for more
oth chemotherapy & radiation treatments which have been, to all signs thus far, successful. The disease & its treatment are quite debilitating, but I had no intention of succumbing to the disease at my young age. I did lose about 50-60 lbs. in the process & I am going to do my best to retain much of that weight loss. Thanks to thrift stores, I now have a new wardrobe which I like better than the one I had, for the most part. The good news is that I have a second book of poetry coming out this summer. It's being put out by a new small press out of Delaware, the Broadkill River Press (the river runs through Milton DE). BRP's first 2 books are coming out in the next couple of weeks. I will be either the 4th or 5th writer published. I have also become involved in the operation of the press as for now almost all its writers live in the DC area. Over the years I had continued writing even though I had not pursued publication very much. As a result I have quite a few poems, some of which have been published in recent months, which should result in a good-sized book, longer than my first, anyway. Also, I have begun painting again, something I did in the late 80s & then abandoned, mainly because of time constraints. I am an abstract artist, so don't expect to see pretty landscapes under my signature anywhere soon. I had a few of my old paintings hanging in my apt. & various visitors encouraged me to begin again. It was always in the back of my mind to paint, but I really have to organize my time well to get anything done in that regard. It also involves some monetary outlay. So, in general I am busy pursuing my interests & doing my best to enjoy life. My hope is that those who read this profile are living fulfilling lives & remain in good health. I can be reached easily by phone as I am the only S. Gold in the Prince George's Cty., Maryland, phone book. Just read over what is written above & realized it was time for an up-date. The second book of poems I mentioned in April 2010 was published in October, 2010 and titled "The Year of the Dog Throwers", after one of the "showpiece" poems in the book. The newest development on that front is that I should have another book coming out in 2013. Tentative title: "Good With Oranges". It may come out on Broadkill River Press or another area small press. It depends. Otherwise I'm doing fine. My oncologist is happy, so I'm happy. Folks say I look good & whom am I to argue. Best Wishes to everyone out there (a big "Hi"). Recently, I purchased a short term membership & realized that I had not updated my profile for years. I also had very little memory of what I said in the past. The upshot is that I now have a total of four books of poetry out: the two books I mentioned earlier and "Good With Oranges" ('15), also on Broadkill River Press, which I thought was coming out in '13, and "Crooked Speech" on Pond Road Press ('18). Also, my work is now more experimental & I have poems in 3 anthologies. I also have a health problem which doesn't "show" & I treat with medication. It does worry me, however, & a procedure may be in my future. Once again, I will be glad to hear from anyone who remembers me and wishes to contact me. Stay safe! NEW: I should have mentioned that I can be found on FB on two pages: a regular page and a Writer's Page. FB is very helpful regarding my writing life & my interests in music. I recognize its drawbacks, but I have also connected with folks I haven't seen for decades.
