Sonya's Story

Life I've been living in Chicago, Illinois for the last five and a half years. I love the city and everything that comes with living in an urban environment. I also enjoy going home to Virginia for the holidays and breaking away from all the people, traffic, etc. I went to school at Columbia College Art School here in Chicago and I have my Bachelor's Degree in Fine Art Photography. My work is sometimes shown at various cafes and galleries around the city. I'm also a Commercial Real Estate Research Photographer. This is what I call my 'real job'...it gives me benefits like health ins., 401 K, (a regular paycheck) that I can't get from selling my artwork alone. Children are not scurrying around my home yet although we have discussed the idea a lot over the years, so it's not out of the question...God knows I'm not getting any younger... I enjoy volunteering my time at soup kitchens for the homeless here in the city and I also like to help out a local facility for elderly people without families. A sad fact; 60% of our homeless here in Chicago are under the age of TWELVE. It really makes me reflect...I thought high school was bad because I was shy and my parents couldn't afford to dress me in the popular clothing styles of the day. I had big problems, huh? Yeah right. Highschool and all the drama that came with it seems so petty these days. It surely doesn't compare to elementary school kids getting killed here because they got in the way of rival gang's gunfire. Yeah, I'd say my stress and I'm sure my classmate's stress as well seems pretty lame compared to what kids face these days. Anyway, I'll get off my soapbox. I have a dog and a cat. My dog is 13, Brittany is her name (she was obviously named wayyyyyyy before we all knew who Britney Spears was) and I've had her since she was 6 weeks old. Back in the day she was viewed as an accident from the breeder. A poodle accidently got to 'play' with a maltese and next thing ya know, out come mixed puppies. These days Br...Expand for more
itt's mixed breed (Maltipoo)is very popular, as is Cockapoo, Labradoodle, Puggle, etc. Who would have thought 13 years ago that she'd be considered a 'designer dog' one day?? HA! She's been a great friend over the years. My cat Chance is fat and gray/black. He is nine years old, needy, needy, needy, and always cries that he didn't get fed enough (he normally gets 2 breakfasts and dinners...). Our condo is on the 8th floor and he loves watching the sea gulls fly by the windows. He's the sweetest cat I've ever known. We are fortunate enough with our careers that we can afford a dog waker for Brittany. She gets walked twice daily by her walker named Tony and is very happy, although the concrete obviously isn't like grass. Oh, and doggie day care places are popular here too. It's great! Some of the facilities even have swimming pools for the dogs in the Summer! Too cool!! Anyway, if Britt wasn't so feeble we'd probably take her to daycare...maybe the next dog will experience that if we still live here. My life for the most part revolves around home and work. We do enjoy traveling. Rome, Italy was our big trip last year. Janet (my partner of six years) went to Africa with Barack Obama last August to cover the story of his family (she works for ABC). She learned a lot about volunteering on vacations over there so I have a feeling that will be our next big trip. Cape Town South Africa sounds gorgeous so I'd like to spend our last few days there relaxing. Well, this bio has turned into more of a personal blog it seems. I have to say that I do look forward to our 20 year high school reunion, which surprises me. I never thought I'd want to go. Life changes us,and thankfully for me my personal experiences have molded me into an outgoing and confident person who barely resembles that quiet, meek, mouse of a girl from high school. I think that's partly why I'm interested in seeing you all at the reunion; it will be great to see how we've all 'evolved'. Take care everyone. SW
