Stanley's Story

Life Columbia College'53 & Columbia Law School'56. Honor student at both. At second firm after law school, participated in the defense of Pete Seeger in House Unamerican Activities case. At third firm, where I became a partner, we represented giant stock exchange corporations and also Martin Luther King, Jr. I handled some of his matters and got to know him. I moved to Greenwich Village in Manhattan, and became active in the Village Independent Democrats, a local club where Ed Koch (later to become NYC mayor) was active. Met my wife, Margot at VID. Married in 1972. Took many vacation trips to Europe, Israel and a couple to Hawaii. A judgeship became available and I decided to take a huge cut in income and try for the judgeship. Became a NYC Civil Court judge, and served in that court for 14 months. Achieved quick notariety by ordering a landlord to get the heat and hot water on within 24 hours and said I'd reduce a fine if he slept in his own building. Transferred to the Family Court for 6 months, and then Acting Supreme Court on criminal side where after a month I handled a case with Bill Kunstler and a courtroom full of reporters. Then elected to Supreme Court where I specialize in medical malpractice cases. I was President of the NYC Assn of Supreme Court justices, and have been President of Manhattan Justices since 2001 and ...Expand for more
on the Board of NYS Assn of Supremes Court Justices. Have taught at numerous judicial and bar seminars and have written articles for them, including a suppression law outline for 26 years. Authored one book. Authored one law that makes cases move faster and easier, and a couple of new rules. I've received a few awards from bar, judicial and law clerks' associations. I have loved every day that I've been a judge. We have enjoyed a vacation home in Fire Island since 1973. Our daughter, Deborah, was born in 1983. She graduated Pace Univ and is doing a little teaching and waitressing (thereby proving that she is an actress) and auditioning. We're all in a two bedrom two bath coop at the edge of Greenwich Village. Margot is on the Board. Retired, because of age, from the bench at the end of 2008, but continue to work three days as a Judicial Hearing Officer. For Yonkers High School, note that I had dinner with Bob Propper and his wife and Gladys over a year ago. Have seen and stay in e-mail contact with Gaby Lefler (Simon). College - I'm in frequent touch with Mort Freilicher and Peter Kenen. Law School - see a number of my classmates in my courtroom. Really enjoyed my 50th reunions for Yonkers High and Columbia College and Law School, so I'd really love to hear from my friends at Yonkers High, and Columbia College and Law School
