Stephanie's Story
College
I attended Hartnell College in Salinas, CA; Monterey Peninsula College in Monterey, CA and Golden Gate University in Monterey, CA. I have a A.A. from Hartnell and a B.S. in Accounting from Golden Gate. I graduated in 1995, 20 years after high school, because I was a single parent who went to college part time. I became a CPA in 1989.
Workplace
After the military I came to Salinas, CA. My first job was being a receptionist for a group of about eight businesses. After four months, I was hired by one of those businesses, Hayashi & Wayland, CPAs as their receptionist/secretary. I started going to school while working for them. I was with them two years. Then I was hired by one of the other businesses, Ingraham & Rasmussen, CPAs. Schooling and experience and a buy-in led me to become partner in Ingraham & Loose, CPAs. I've just finished my 25th tax season with my partner Francis Ingraham.
Military
I signed up for the Army on 1/17/75. I had...Expand for more
to graduate high school and turn 18 (in July), before I went to basic training at Fort Jackson, SC. I had advanced training at Fort Lee, VA and was permanently stationed at Fort Campbell, KY for the rest of my two year enlistment.
I was trained to be an equipment supply specialist (76S20). However, since there weren't many women around when I got to Campbell, I was placed in the motor pool, where I was a dispatcher for all of the vehicles (jeeps, pickups, 2.5T and 5T trucks and generators). I kept log books and prepared readiness reports. After mastering the job I looked for something more exciting and was accepted in the Post Choir, which existed for two months. I had fun being paid to sing. I do believe I sang for General Colin Powell. When the choir disbanded, I did the work that I was trained for. I organized a warehouse full of parts. I'd do it all again, but be selective about what I wanted to be trained in, rather than believe a recruiter.
