Stephanie's Story

Life So much, so little space. Born and raised in Houston, Texas. Third child in 4 siblings, Stephen, Sandra and Scott. Lived with Hepatitis C since the age of 8. I was 27 when I was first diagnosed and it was so new, that there was not much being done about it. Living with HCV was not fun, I suffered from aches and pains, stiff joints (as young as 12), depression (first diagnosed at 13). Had problems in school, made the wrong friends (now I'm glad I know it was low self esteem and not just stupidity) lol. There were rashes, lung problems and mirade of health issues. I have two boys, Corey and Brandon whom without them I would of given up along time ago. My boyfriend, Craig, is another plus! He knows how to keep me laughing and is such a sweetheart! Antiviral chemotherapy from Sept.2001 to August 2002 has allowed the virus to be in remission. I still have problems here and there, but most days are filled with more activity than the many previous years. It's only up from here on out! Please get tested for HCV. No one is immune. There is no vaccine for HCV. HCV can infect persons in any way blood to blood contact is made. Dentist visits, mass innoculations (how my doctor and I think I got it-going by a rash thats relative to HCV and has lived with me since the age of 8), any surgery before 1990, sharing drug paraphenalia...the list is endless. My father is not doing well, it should be a matter of time now. He has fought hard, but unfortunately, the lymphoma has spread beyond what chemotherapy can do. Scott, my little brother and his family were here for a week and had a great visit. We had a blast! Played late night games trying to sneak a toilet papering job on one anothers car/house late at night....Fun acting like teens again and all the boys had a blast! Jeremy and Jacob (scotts two boys) and my two (Corey and Brandon) will never forget the night things went haywire creating memories to last a lifetime! Sad news....my father lost his battle with non-hodkins lymphoma (secondary from his first bout with renal carcinoma) and the return of renal carcinoma. He died peacefully with my sister by his side. School In 7th period english, we had a substitute for a few days. We were all in test mode, so the entire class was being oddly quiet. I raised my hand to visit the restroom and the sub let m...Expand for more
e go....quietly i opened the door to leave, as I stepped into the hall way, I swung the door a bit too hard behind me and missed catching the knob, the door slammed shut. As I turned to look through the door window, the WHOLE class was just landing in their seats. I laughed all the way down to the restroom! When I returned, the class all peered at me as I opened the door. I just kind of shrugged my shoulders. College Studied at San Jacinto and Houston Community College Central. Workplace Still at researching! Fall Wedding! Halloween Party! Aqua~Bower Pools is thriving! The nice thing about owning a company is that you can work from home and work at home! LOL I was great seeing Hall, Amy and Vicky as well as many others at our 20th! Please keep in touch! Halloween is my favorite time of the year, so expect a party invite!! (KIDS WELCOME!) Hopefully this year our little haunted house will be better and let's hope for NO RAIN this year! Hugs to all! Military Well, I figured I'd write something here as part of being an advocate for HCV. Veterans of any age, those who served in the past and those who continue to enlist-please be warned that HCV runs rampant in our service members. One veteran out of three to this very day leave the service HCV infected do to the proceedures using the Jetshot gun. These are NOT safe! They spread all diseases. With that being said, many non-military citizens have at least one risk factor for HCV! Please get tested as that is the only way you will find out before your health takes a drastic turn! Commonly symptoms are overlooked as being diseases on their own, however, those in the HCV community are making more doctor's aware that these "bi-directional diseases" are more common in those with chronic HCV. Things to ponder: Fibromyalgia or any other arthritic condition. Depression or any other CNS disturbance. ADHD with or without hyperactivity (yes, adults too!) Skin rashes Repeat infections of any kind Type 2 Diabeties NASH (fatty liver) There are other symptoms or diseases that can go along with HCV, so if your just not feeling right, depression meds don't work or you can't tolerate them, please get tested! Treatment will help reduces these diseases (symptoms). Thanks for reading! stephanie schultz-bower Riss- Hepatitis C-Objectives
