Stephen's Story
Life
To be honest I am not sure if many of you even remember me. I was pretty quiet and was a bit socially awkward as a youth. I left high school midterm to join the Navy. I was not around for my graduation. By the time you guys graduated I was already through boot camp and on my way to training as an aircraft mechanic.
I finally decided to get out after 23 yrs of active service. Hard to believe how the time has gone by so fast. Seems like only yesterday I was that shy and pretty reserved kid in school that hardly any of you got to know.
I live in San Diego. Been here the whole time. San Diego is a great city. Weather is good and there are all kinds of things to do here. I had given it thought to coming back to Oregon after getting out of the Navy but, my life is here and for now I will remain here.
I am single. I was pretty much wedded to the Navy and was traveling all the time so there was not really any time for someone in my life. Now that I am out I hope to change that before the next reunion.
I have grown a lot in my life. School was not an easy thing for me socially. Did not know who I was or what I wanted out of life. I am grateful everyday for the experiences I have had and the growth I have gone through.
Feel free to drop me a line and say hello. I am always looking to connect with the past. Never afraid of being asked a question. Will the person asking it be afraid of the answer though is the question. :)
I do plan to be at the next reunion. I was not able to make the last one due to military commitments. Now that my life is once again my own I look forward to making the next one.
School
The teacher who inspired me most was Mr Vern Voss. He was an awesome wood shop teacher and under that gruff exterior was a guy who had a lot of passion for his work. I wish I could have seen him before he ...Expand for more
passed away. God bless him.
I don't have too many memories of school. Mostly because I did not participate much. Lots of reasons why but not important anymore.
I had a few crushes while I was in school but I will just leave it at that. Suffice to say, nothing ever came of them.
If I had to do it all over again, knowing what I know now...I would do some things differently. I probably would have tried to be more involved and made more of the time I had. However, since I can't change things, I am ok with the way things turned out.
College
Since I did not go to college I have been making up for lost time. Currently attending Embry Riddle Aeronautical College to complete my degree in aviation management. School is much different now than it was. Looking forward completing my degree soon.
Workplace
Have a new job here in San Diego working on vibration analysis equipment for military aircraft. Looking forward to the new path life is taking me.
Military
Completed 23 yrs in the Navy! I "retired" as a Chief Petty Officer (CPO / E-7). It was a good experience and I learned a lot about me and it caused me to grow as a person. I have been to parts of the world some would only dream to see and some would dread to go to. When I was in I was an aviation mechanic working on H-46 and H-60 aircraft. I did cruises on small ships and aircraft carriers, operating in some pretty arduous environments.
I also was a Navy Substance Abuse Counselor helping service men and women deal with substance abuse and addiction. It was a great time in my career. It gave me a chance to give something back to the Navy and learn about people.
I was very good at what I did while I was in the Navy, and while I was somewhat sad to leave it I realized it was time to for a change in my life. It was an experience I will always cherish and reflect on.
