Stephen's Story
I attended Keystone high School until halfway through eighth grade, after which I moved to Becker Research Learning Center at Clarion State University Campus. It appears as if plenty of my Keystone classmates remember me, based on visits to this site and old friends I saw at the 30th reunion at Jay and Deb Keister¿s place this year (2009). After graduation in 1979, I attended Prescott College in Prescott, Arizona for the 1979/1980 academic year. I moved to Salem, Oregon in June, 1980 to work in a bicycle shop, intending to be there for the summer to finance a return to Prescott. That never happened¿
Instead, I worked in retail and service of bicycles, woodstoves and solar heating appliances in Salem through 1990. This kind of work ¿ customer service ¿ finally made me too crazy to continue¿ In 1990, I volunteered with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as a Spotted Owl surveyor. I had always wanted to be a working biologist, and that experience hooked me. So, in 1991, I began seasonal work with BLM, driving around in deep dark forests, at night where Bigfoot allegedly roams ¿hooting¿ for spotted owls and doing all kinds of interesting biological survey work. I worked my way up in BLM, but could not get a permanent position¿. But I was sure having fun! I led assisted with some key data collection on Harlequin Ducks, forest salamanders, and slugs and snails, and I became a songbird bander ¿ I ran a bird banding station over a six year period, catching and banding bir...Expand for more

In 1999, I finally found an advocate within agency who got me into a BLM program that would assist me with finishing the college degree I had started 20 years earlier. After four years at Oregon State University, I finished a B.S. degree in Natural Resources and finally became a permanent career-conditional BLM biologist in 2004. I had gotten together with my wife-to-be in 1999, and we were married in 2004, just after I finished my degree. For the next two years, I handled wildlife biologist¿s tasks and served as Timber Sale Team Lead for my Resource Area. In 2006, Laura and I moved to Burns the edge of the southeast Oregon desert, where I worked as a Riparian and Fisheries Specialist, Rangeland Conservationist and Botanist. In May, 2009, Laura died suddenly at home, and I decided to return to my roots in Pennsylvania. I have been in Elk City since late June.
I accepted a transfer to Allegheny National Forest in early August, and sometime in October, will duties and responsibilities as Oil and Gas Administrator for the forest. I will be living in Warren, most likely and my duty station will be in Marshburg. It¿s great to be back in Pennsylvania¿ I missed the place.
You can look me up at the "calphotos" website... follow the link through "photographers" to find contact information (type the fist three letters of my name - DOW). Do a Google search on my name with the word "photography" and you will see some of what keeps me busy when I'm not working...
