Stephen's Story
Life
I was born in OKC, OK December 8, 1961. I was adopted by H.C. and Marian Duncan of Lawton that same year and was taken home on the Feast of St. Stephen.
I grew up in Lawton, attending St. Mary's Catholic School for first grade, Sullivan Villiage Elementary School for 2-6, MacArthur Junior High and MacArthur High. I was the first "Piper MacArthur" and graduated with top honors (4.0) and as Lt. Col. in AJROTC.
I went to college in Weatherford, Ok at SWSU. I received my BA in sacred music in 1983, BME in instrumental music in 1984.
I then joined the seminary program of Holy Cross at Notre Dame and spent two years with Holy Cross. One at Moreau Seminary (ND) and the other at Novitiate in Waterford, New York.
After leaving the Novitiate, I returned to Southwestern to pursue a MM in music education. I taught the next year k-12 at the Kremlin Hillsdale USD just North of Enid, OK.
I finished my MM in the summer of 1987 and took a Teaching Assistantship at the then Memphis State University where I taught music appreciation an...Expand for more
d played double reeds for the next four years.
While pursuing my DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) in Sacred Music, I served as Coordinator of Liturgical Music for the Catholic Diocese of Memphis and as Principal Cantor of the Cathedral.
Upon graduation I took a position in Portales, NM at Eastern New Mexico University. I worked at ENMU for the next 8 years. Meanwhile I continued my research and worked extensivley with the Society for Ethnomusicology (helping to revive and strengthen the SW chapter).
In 1999 I decided to do as my father had suggested and returned to elementary music education and moved to Galveston Island off the coast of Texas. I teach now full time in La Marque ISD, part time at Galveston College, and continue my ministry as an Orthodox Priest with the local Serbian Orthodox Church (the oldest Orthodox Church in Texas).
I have written two academic books which are available through Amazon.com or by special order through any bookstore.
I live 15 blocks off the beach on a subtropical island with my two dachshunds.
