Stephen's Story
Life
I was born in Kitchener, Ontario and lived in Waterloo, Ontario until I was nine years old. We moved to Belleville, Ontario when my dad became the School Inspector for the schools surrounding Belleville in 1959. I went to Moira SS from grade 9 to 12 and only attended Chippewa for one year, grade 13, after having moved to North Bay from Belleville in 1969. After high school and one year at Nipissing I headed west and basically lived in Vancouver for over 38 years! The first ten years were in the music business in Vancouver (yes I did play piano at both Moira and Chippewa) but in 1982 I started working for Transport Canada in Air Traffic Services. Starting in 1999 I was on leave from my job with NAV Canada, Canada's privatized air traffic services provider, and served four terms as the Regional Vice-President Pacific with the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees -- a Component of the Public Service Alliance of Canada. I retired after the 2011 UCTE convention and my wife and I now live in our lake house on beautiful Manitoulin Island.
College
After one year at Nipissing I headed west and lived in British Columbia until my retirement in 2011. During the 70s I studied Italian at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and during the 8...Expand for more
0s I attended classes at the British Columbia Institute of Techmology (BCIT) in Burnaby and at the College of New Caledonia (CNC) in Prince George ending up with a Business Certificate in Travel & Tourism. In 2012 I spent a year at the University of Western Ontario (UWO) studying Piano Technology at the Don Wright Faculty of Music and graduated in 2013 with a Certificate.
Workplace
The first ten years were in the music business in Vancouver selling pianos & organs and playing professionally in Vancouver but in 1982 I started working for Transport Canada in Air Traffic Services. I was first posted at Prince George Airport in BC but I moved to the Vancouver Air Traffic Control Centre in 1986 just in time for Expo 86. In 1996 the Air Traffic Services business in Canada was privatized and we became NAV Canada. Starting in 1999 I went on leave from my job with NAV Canada having been elected to the full-time position of Regional Vice-President Pacific with the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees, a component of the Public Service Alliance of Canada. My position with the Union was an elected one and since first being elected in 1999 I was re-elected in 2002, 2005 and 2008. I expected I might just retire at the end of my term in 2011 and I did!
