Stephen's Story

Captain Stephen W. Hampton (Ret) USN is a native of Brookfield, Wisconsin and 1977 alumni of Brookfield East High School. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1981 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Captain Hampton enjoyed a 30 year career as a Surface Warfare Officer in the Navy, retiring from active military duty in 2011. He worked briefly as a consulting expert in Surface Warfare for the Kern Technology Group, supporting projects for the Office Naval Research. Since 2012, he has worked for GE Healthcare in Global Services as the Director of Global Training Operations. During his Navy career, he was in command three times; two at sea and once ashore. His sea duty assignments included tours in USS FORRESTAL (CV 59) as a Propulsion Division Officer and in USS CLARK (FFG 11) as Combat Information Center and Communications Officer. His Department Head tours were in USS JOHN L. HALL (FFG 32) and USS THOMAS S. GATES (CG 51), both as an Operations Officer. He served as Executive Officer in USS CONOLLY (DD 979), at Destroyer Squadron Twenty-Six as Chief Staff Officer, and as ACOS of Operations for Commander, Cruiser Destroyer Group Two. He commanded the Spruance Class Destroyer USS DEYO (DD 989) from October 1999 through June 2001, and then commanded the Aegis Cruiser USS NORMANDY (CG 60) from Oct 2004 until September 2006. ndian Ocean, and Arabian Gulf, as well as several shorter deployments to the North Atlantic and the Caribbean Sea. His broad experience at sea captures the Lebanon Crisis, Arabian Gulf Escort Operations, groundbreaking Coast Guard Counter-Drug Operations, and North Atlantic Anti-Submarine Operations in the 80s. Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and several Sixth Fleet and NATO deployments in the 90s, including command of the Destroyer USS DEYO. During the last decade, he oversaw George Washington Strike Group operations during Enduring Freedom and Southern Watch, and while in command of USS NORMANDY, he served as a Warfare Commander for CTF 50 and CTF 51, as well as CTF 58 Flagship during Iraqi Freedom Maritime Security Operations. Ashore, Captain Hampton earned a Masters of Science, Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Technologies in 1987 from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey California. In 2004, he earned a Masters of Science in National Security Strategy from the National War College in Washington DC, specializing in Balkan and Economic studies. He completed his career commanding the Center for Surface Combat Systems (CSCS) at Dahlgren, Virginia -- one of the Navy's largest and most complex training centers. Captain Hampton is married to the former Teresa Beasley, who is a native of Washington, Indiana. The Hamptons have returned to Brookfield Wisconsin after residing in Yorktown, Virginia for 20 years. They have two two daughters, Cassandra and Carlie.
