STEPHEN's Story
Here is a brief summary of what I've done/experienced. Shortly, actually just a few days, after graduation from Gorham Central I entered the Army at the US Military Academy at West Point. I completed my education and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in June of 1969. The next day I married Lorraine Richie, one of our high school classmates and my high school sweetheart. I then began my Army duties. I was assigned to Germany for over three years and then was sent to Korea for a year. Following those assignments, I was assigned to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland for a brief period until I left the service and moved to the Boston area, where I attended the Harvard Business School, graduating with an MBA in 1977. I got a job in finance at Corning Glass Works in Corning, NY, where Lorraine and I had our first child in 1978, Sarah. Corning moved us around - first Kentucky, then Virginia, where our son, Stephen, Jr., was born, and then back to Corning, NY, where our second daughter, Lauren, was born. I left Corning, and we moved to Sturbridge, MA, where I worked for American Optical. Unfortunately Lorraine's and my marriage ended in 2002, and I then married Kathleen. I left American Optical to join a millwork company, Rivco, near Concord, NH, as the CFO. That job ended, and I then joined Argus Management, a consulting firm where I worked with various (mostly financially troubled) companies in New England and the East Coast. Finally, in 1998, I followed a hobby and started my own small ...Expand for more
company selling paintball and airsoft equipment with two retail locations, one in NH and one in MA, and Kathleen and I live in the northeast corner of CT. I got involved in the local government in the town in CT where I live. I was elected to the Board of Selectmen (like a town council) for two two-year terms and then twice (six-year terms) to the Board of Finance, where I currently serve as the Vice Chair. I do want to mention my children. Sarah lives in Boston, where she is a realtor. Stephen, Jr attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute for several years but left and helped me out by expanding my paintball business onto Amazon. He had moved to Boston but relocated to Brooklyn, NY. He recently, this past summer in 2025, finished his bachelor's degree in Math at Indiana U and is now about to pursue a master's at Columbia or NYU, among other options. Unfortunately, our youngest daughter struggled with drug addiction, and in May of 2020, she died of an overdose. I know many of us have had various struggles over our lives, and I am sure I am not the only one who has lost a child, but I can say it is a horrible event/experience. Currently, I am still involved in my paintball and airsoft business, but I am not sure how much longer I will continue it. I am unable to actually play airsoft or paintball activities, as I have had multiple spinal surgeries and need a walker to get around. If you are a high school classmate, please drop me a note to let me know how you are doing. I'd love to hear from you.
