Stephen's Story
I spent the first 18 years in Yonkers and the rest of my life getting over it, to paraphrase Woody Allen.
You know you grew up in Yonkers if you remember eating hot dogs at Nathans on Central Park Avenue at 2am after a wild time at the Candlelight on Central Avenue.
You know you grew up in Yonkers if you drank beer in the park with at least 10 other people and sang songs out of key. (best to get the stupid stuff out of the way when you're young)
You know you grew up in Yonkers if you spent your youth exploring all 1146 acres of Van Cortland Park - or swallowing gallons of chlorinated water at Tibbits Pool while trying to keep up with your older siblings.
You know you moved away from Yonkers when you pass people on the street and they don't know what cauffy is or how to tawk or discuss lofty idears. They just know how...Expand for more
to hate the Yankees and Mets.
I moved away after graduation, and really never looked back until now, which just goes to show you're only young once but can be immature for a very long time :-).
Post 1970: Went off to school in Florida (St. Leos) then Boston (Bentley College; Northeastern U.) Moved across the country in 1979 to Los Angeles. Marriage, kids, career. Traveled around North America and Europe. Worked in technology (Sperry Univac and SAP and for the past 8 years in web development and most recently social networking).
It's nearing the end of July 2009 and I'm wondering how all of you Lincoln High School classmates are. The ones I know and the ones I never had the good fortune to really meet. I'm looking forward to seeing many of you October 16, 2010.
Until then, be well, do good work and stay in touch.
