Steve's Story
Life
Growing up in North Tonawanda and in WNY makes you a member of a select community.
The Litwin name was part of Oliver St since the 1930s with Litwin's Bar & Grill on the corner of 6th and Oliver. Originally a Barbershop and Bar combo, with my Grandfather Peter in control, after his death at an early age my Grandmother and then Uncles ran it until it closed in the 1980s.
My Maternal side of the family was Moskal and they also could be found on the upper end of the double digit Avenues.
Much has happened since High School in NT. The University of Buffalo, my heritage, the Buffalo Polish music scene, and more have all kept me busy. In 1972, during a trip to Syracuse, a very special woman asked me to dance. That started a relationship that continues to this day. Adele picked me out of of hundreds of people and we were married in 1973. My involvement in Polka Music, which originated as a child, grew and I began doing regular columns in trade and Polish American papers throughout the country. Writing for five papers at one time, I am now exclusive in the Polish American Journal, a monthly published out of Buffalo, NY. As an Associate Editor and Polka Music Editor for the paper, I was responsible for placing the PAJ news on the internet with their first web page.
I've also had the good fortune to have my comments and/or articles in several national magazines and newspapers.
Musically, the Chemnitz style Concertina has become my main instrument. Since 1984 Adele and I have sponsored a Concertina Jam session at a major festival in Western Pennsylvania. Each year over 50 concertina players and musicians from around the country and over 300 spectators attend. The musicians perform tunes connected to our heritage and the music of our Fathers and Grandfathers. This,...Expand for more
of course, is all a labor of love. By day I am an Electrical Design Engineer with a local corporation. Any other free time is spent with old movies, old movie serials, the music of the 40's thru 60's, collecting "concertina playing figurines and polka related history," antiques, nostalgia , drives to nowhere special, genealogy and computers. My music interests range from the obvious, polkas, to anything recorded before 1975. I've also done several stints as as DeeJay, both on the air and for off-air events. 2003 marked our 30th Wedding Anniversary We still visit NT several times throughout each year.
In early 2004 I had the pleasure of writing several articles for an Western New York Historical website as well as for the local Tonawanda News.
In September, 2004, we traveled to Michigan where I am humbled by being inducted into the World Concertina Congress Hall of Fame. Since the 1970s this group has recognized those that have promoted, publicized and continued to maintain the Chemnitz style concertina and it's use in the music industry.
In the rest of my spare time I maintain several websites including our Prospect Terrace Volunteer Fire Company site, an NTHS Reunion site and multiple genealogy and family sites.
Adele and I have no children but about a dozen Godchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In 2008 we marked our 35th Wedding Anniversary and also the 25th year sponsoring a Concertina Jam Session at the Seven Springs Resort in Western PA.
Retirement is someplace in our near future but at his point we both enjoy life and being together.
Classmates has provided the opportunity to re-connect with many past friends and family members, as well as make new friends.
As I've said and written many times, once an NT'er, always an NT'er. It's in our blood.
