Stephen's Story

Life After graduation in 1995, I attended ITT Technical Institute to study Computer Aided Drafting for one year. It was great but,in May of 1996, I decided to drop out. ITT Tech didn't have any Basic Skills courses to build your education from the ground up. After leaving ITT Tech in May 1996, I started my education all over again at Milwaukee Area Technical College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I studied the Basic Skills courses to develop my potential for my chosen major, and in January of 1997, I entered in the program of Printing and Electronic Publishing (now known as Graphic Communication Technologies) which led me to an Associate Degree in May of 2000. In between, I worked for two temporary services, local employers of the Milwaukee World Festival, Wisconsin Center District, St. Camillus Campus, a nursing home in Wauwatosa, UW-Milwaukee as an Offset Press Operator, Quebecor World as a temp bindery worker. Plus, a Finishing Associate at Coakley-Tech.(They were "short- lived jobs" in which they didn't last very long due to layoffs.) I also worked for UPS, as a Seasonal Driver Helper for 2 holiday seasons, and one peak season as a Seasonal Package Handler for the Wisconsin District. And I also became a member of the Teamsters 344 Union. I am also currently active and working in my church-New St. James Community Church United Methodist Church here in Milwaukee. I am currently a member of the Usher Board, and communications. And soon to be a computer lab associate.Furthermore, I work as a Secretary and Custodian. In addition I have been involved with the Milwaukee Scholarship Coalition, formally known as the Martin Luther King All-A-Thon Scholarship Fundraiser for 5 years (and won 6 Scholarships)Plus, I volunteered at African World Festival in August '97, and my home church for several summers as a volunteer for their summer programs. I also volunteered as a game assistant for the Milwaukee Public Schools in the spring of 2001. Right now, I am residing with my oldest sister near the Hampton Avenue neighborhood in Milwaukee. In May, 2006 I have graduated from the UW-Stout in Industrial Management Program via Distance Education. I used Distance Education to earn my degree through Online Courses and 2 way Video Conferencing at a remote site. Also, I took more courses at Milwaukee Area Technical College to add along with my Bachelor's Degree. ( i.e. Milwaukee Area Technical College is a remote site for UW-Stout). With this degree, hopefully I could add more emphasis on the Industrial/Graphics Fields. As far as my martial status, I am single, with no children (sorry I haven't met or dated anyone!) and as for my outside activities besides computers, my choice in music (mostly hip hop, soul, and r&b) reading, sports, and video games, I still play my saxophones!-this time upon request for my church. Plus, more recently, I have been going Alumni Gatherings for MATC, where I met other former students from various classes in the Milwaukee Area. Plus, I also attended UW-Stout Alumni Gatherings for the Milwaukee Area residents, and recently, I attended alumni outings for John Marshall High School in which it does involves reunions for my 90's classes, and also I was apart of the school's 50th Anniversary Committee in which I assisted and helped the needs of the Alumni Association for the events. In addition, I am actively serving on the Marshall Alumni Association Board of Directors with me being the first 90's black alum to be selected. That's my story. Hope to hear from all of you soon! Come check me out on MySpace, Facebook, Twitter or Linkedin.com and I may see you on there! School 1981-1988: 38th Street School Mascots and Colors: Eagles and Blue/Yellow Best Year(s): Three Way Tie: 1st Grade, 3rd, and 5th Grades. North, South, East and West, 38th Street School is the best! This was sort of hard to determine the best so here it is: Well in addition,I remember most were the field trips to Oak Ridge Farm, the Museum, County Zoo, Palmyra, Kettle Moraine and many others. Also, I remember Dodgeball, Gymnastics, and Kickball in gym class! 1988-1991: Jackie Robinson Middle School Mascots and Colors: Lions and...Expand for more
Blue/Gold Best Year: 8th Grade-In September of 1990, one of my former gym teachers, Mary Fowlkes was a army reservist who served in Operation Desert Storm. After 5 to 6 months, March of '91 was a huge homecoming for her, and the school was on the map because of her heroic job serving our country. Plus, I also remember visiting the East Coast: NY, Philly and DC. Also did I mention I was awarded into the Beta Club? I also remember watching In Living Color and The Simpsons on Fox. Also, Urkel and the Fresh Prince were just starting to come on TV. Including Al Bundy! 1991-1995: John Marshall High School Mascots and Colors: Eagles and Colonial Blue/Red Best Year: Well this is a tough one! 1992-1993: It began when my marching techniques were strong from my first year. I also remember going to the homecoming dance that year(bugging out of course), joined the jazz band, and my dad's corvette was getting noticed! (ala from freshman year) Not to mention girls also. Some of favorite shows of Martin, Living Single and RAW came on the air, as well as Brett Farve coming to Green Bay, Bill Clinton becoming president for the first time, the Chicago Bulls were the NBA Champions, and the Original US Dream Team winning a gold medal (Not a Bronze Medal!)in Barcelona. Plus, Al Bundy, Fresh Prince, and Urkel were still on TV. 1993-1994: For the first time ever, I maintained a 3.0 GPA each time. The highest I earned towards the end was a 3.8! This reward catapulted my name into the Journal Sentinel's Student Achivers for the first time. Also another first occured: All City Honors Band and Very Special Arts with the Band and Special Education students. Plus, I attended another homecoming dance. During that year Wisconsin Badgers Football Team won the Rose Bowl in '94, the late Reggie White shocked everyone when he joined the Packers, and Michael Jordan retired for the first time and entered minor league baseball. 1994-1995: Keith Sweat quoted "Make It Last Forever" I know this year. Yes, the final year. More of the same from the previous year(s): (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Student Achivers, Music Achivement, and all), including stage crew and children's theater. I also was introduced to teleconference communications on a field trip (which I currently use with UW-Stout) which I was pictured in the Jump section! Plus, I remember hearing an annoucement about registering to vote, which I chose to do in April of '95(And I still vote to this day). I also attended homecoming, enjoyed the senior prom at the War Memorial (even though I did not have a date, but now I don't feel guilty about it.), 1st ever "Back in the Day Dance", senior picnic, the first senior dinner, earned a gold medal for the WSMA solo on Tenor Sax, and last but not least, the Graduation at MATC's Cooley Auditorium. All 234 of us waiving goodbye to each other and to Marshall High School on June 8, 1995, a thursday night. For me, it was the greatest night I'll never forget when my named was called and my "Special Emotion" on stage proved it. Also, the words of Oklahoma City, Lawrence Taylor, Internet, Eazy-E, Yahoo, and Michael Jordan's Comeback, came to mind in '95. On a side note: Band was cool, friends were cool(didn't matter which grad class), Marshall was cool and I was cool!
