Stephen's Story

A good story always begins with some introspective soul gazing at the clouds as the pass by, or listening to the sea crashing on the rocks below. My story begins on New York Blvd., right across the street from the shoe shop and next door to Tony's soda shop. P.S. 52, one of the best in the city, back in the days when a public school education New York could get you anywhere. I, we, had the great fortune of having Ms. Davis, one of the first Black female principals in New York City, as our fearless leader. Being kids, we had no idea how special that was. Nor do I believe did we have any idea how special our little world was there at 52. For Black folks, I don't know that it got any better. Props to Mrs. Deele, Mrs. Cohen, Mrs. Payne and Mrs. Bloch, but especially to Delia Deele. She busted our butts in the 6th grade because she believed in us. That was a wonderful gift. From there it was on to 231. Tri-Community at the high of the social experiement called integration. Kids from Springfield Gardens, Rosedale and whatever that neigborhood was on the other side of the Belt Parkway (just kidding). One thin I never could understand though, why was it that they could find enough seats in the SP class for the kids from Rosedales, but the kids from 52 got a class of their very own 7H? Things that make you go hmmm. Anyway, 231 was an interesting time. Who could forget Mr. Stoesell and the Goober Peas song? Or, Mr. Bernstein and his terrible jokes. Or, Mr. C. What was his real name? I may be betraying a bit too much here, but I have to give props to Felice Tannenbaum. God, that girl was a godess in her low-rider hiphuggers. I digress. How did the experiemtnt that was 231 turn out? Was it overtaken by the forces of history? I drove by it a few weeks and wondered what it is like now. Anybody know? I think the thing that remember most is that we, the kids, were trying to figure ou...Expand for more
t what it might mean to be friends across racial lines and probably could have done it if the adults hadn't been around. Shout out to Dennis Pepitone and Joel Katzman, the first white guys I ever called friend. On to Francis Lewis H.S. on the scenic parkway known as Utopia. What can I say. Busing, Race Riots, Weed and Dianne Lewis. These were the best of times and the worst of times. The times of possibility and of dashed hopes. It was high school. Could you pay me a million dollars to go back? Nah! Who the hell could stand walking down Judgment Hall nowadays or having to watch Ahmed eat those mayonnaise heros with a pinch of meat. Kenny Duff if you are out there holla. WNEC. Susan, Iota. nuf said. R.I.P. to the friends who have gone on. Charlie Shepard, Jerry Bronaugh, Sheila Pullins and Darryl Holder. Damn, I am only 48 the list should be shorter. From the bucolic fields of Western Mass it was bright lights and big city all the way. . . for a while. After living in the city for some years working in the financial industry . . . having blast . . .meeting and messing up with the ONE. You know who the ONE is . . .the one who makes your heart flutter so much it feels like it is going to fly out of your chest . . .the one who you can't see past, the world just melts around her. You know the ONE . . . whose smile takes your breath away and the ONE that scares you so much that at 22 all you can do is run. Marlena Shaw was right. After "growing up" a little more I moved to Hartford, Ct to marry my college sweetheart, Susan. Lived there for 15 years, during which time I was the undeserving recipient of a great gift from God, my daughter Kiara. I went into the ministry there back in 1985--seems like so long ago. I finished up my B.S. and went to Yale for my Masters in Divinity and my Ph.D. and have been teaching theology and African-American Studies since then. More later.
