Stephen's Story

Miss Ruby There are times when writing from the heart, the first few lines are difficult to grasp, however the following sentences and fewer paragraphs spilled freely and innocently onto the sheet as I only watched. There may be many, or possibly very few who will ever read the words written here and that matters not at all. The thing that does matter is that each word found here was written only for the special one who will know them first, and for her alone to know, both her and I. It is for you alone that I share this special place, special times, and a friend. On a dirt, country road lies a small and humble church that I found in desperation one afternoon long ago. The time was two in the afternoon, the date was March 23, and it was a Monday in 1998. I stopped under a large tree, and in another few moments I found myself kneeling in prayer at the edge of a small cemetery. Tears flooded my eyes and my voice broke in sobs as I prayed. Looking back to that afternoon now, I realize that it was a selfish prayer I gave words to. I pleaded only that the Lord remove the pain I felt in my heart and that grief would go away, if only for a little while. Eventually, I could finally raise my face from my hands and through tear swollen eyes, I first noticed her. Her name was Ruby Rachell and as I looked closer I saw that she had been a loving mother and wife. As I read on, she told me that she had been born in June, 1929 and stayed here until 1993, Aug. 6. ed on the humble concrete pad that was placed there but she told me she didn¿t mind and I lingered a while longer. When I finally stood from that place and said good-bye to Ruby, and Amen to God, I felt some small inner- peace that day. I have returned many times since then to pray and sometimes just talk with God and Ruby and have found my prayers are no longer the selfish words I spoke that first afternoon. I told them of you and the day we met and we shared the joy of years gone by. I have spoken most recently of difficulties and my feelings of emptiness through teary eyes. Both have listened and assure me that they care and are here for us. I say both because God seems always there when Ruby and I share. My most recent prayers at the little church are for you and I to kneel together, in that most special place, and that you know completely the part of me that truly cares so deeply for you. I had suspected for years that the little church might be one of black Christians. On a Saturday afternoon most recently, as I knelt and prayed, their service ended. There were many who noticed me on bended knee as they filed from their worship yet not one seemed to mind me humbled there. I suspect that within us and in God¿s eyes, we each truly are all the same. I now believe with all my heart that it¿s the sincerest of prayers, from the most humble places that God answers with smiles. Know I care deeply for you this moment and for all moments to come with all that I am! I simply love you !
