Stephen's Story
Married Elisabeth Wall from Southwest in 1979. Paid family court in CT to change my surname legally so our adopted daughter could share "Wall-Smith." Mona married a fellow with a four-letter surname which she took as her own and was happy to lose the hyphen.
Currently (since 2016) living in St. Louis, MO, less than a block from our daughter and son-in-law. No grandkids, as yet.
One of the curses from Southwest that I can't shake is that to this day, I really like school. Nobody in the office would have guessed that from my attendance record, but it's true. Apparently, I can't get enough education. My BA is from NYU (double major plus an English minor), followed by two master's degrees (currently enrolled for my third, at 67, an MBA), a PhD (in philosophy, of all things) and four graduate certificates in military operations (basic and advanced), systems analysis, and institutional research.
Lis and I moved 17 times (as of 2022) during the 44 years we've been married. We've lived in Columbia, MO (4 addresses); Connecticut (2 addresses); New York (2 addresses); Massachusetts; and Virginia (4 addresses), with a short stretch...Expand for more
in North Carolina. And southern Florida, where we have a small condo near family members there. My favorite stop to date was Norfolk, VA, where I was the part-time pastor of Park Place United Methodist Church. I closed the church and retired from pastoral ministry in 2016 after 38 years. I could have taken another appointment and finished a full 40 years, but after Park Place, honestly, there was nowhere to go but down.
I'm currently retired from the United Methodist Church, the U.S. Navy Reserve, the University of Missouri, and the State of Missouri. I still teach a part-time rotation of Professional Communications, Organizational Leadership, and Graduate Research and Writing for the Project Management Department at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology. Lis put in 40 years as a registered nurse, working mostly with outpatients, and retired right before the COVID pandemic hit. No regrets there.
I'm fat, bald, and deaf as the proverbial post. I have a turkey-wattle neck and bad posture. My knees are going. I'm kind of hoping time hasn't been any kinder to anyone else, but will probably be disabused at the 50th.
