Stephen's Story

After seeing that several people had been kind enough to be curious about my profile and it has been largely unchanged for at least 10 years (yes, I have been a longtime Classmates member), I thought I should write something at least informative rather than those asinine profile questions. So here is a brief synopsis. After graduating from Abington in 1974, I attended Harvard College. While there I majored in Biology and toyed with the idea of a career in law or medicine. That was not fun. What was fun was the Marching Band, working on Harvard's radio station in News and Classical music as an announcer, and in 1976 I started the R & B department at the radio station. I had to keep air time staffed from 7:00 PM-4:00 AM every Saturday night for the year. I took the 11:00 PM-4:00 AM shift for 1.5 of my three years. I announced Classical music Friday afternoons for 2 years. I only did News for a year. That R & B department still exists today. Medicine won out, and since I was graduating in three years instead of four my career ended. Even so, I made lifelong friends there. So, it was off to medical school, and I attended Jefferson Medical College in Philly for the usual four years. Medical School was boring for the most part. College was more difficult. After Ricky Housepian ('75) literally chased down my parents on Walnut St to tell his second grade teacher to come in and see brother's disco, I got a membership at the Second Story. I went to the ballet. I joined a fraternity, played pinball, and consumed alcohol. Oh yes, I did learn something and decided I wanted to be an OBGYN. You can practice surgery, medicine, your patients can get better (unlike Internal Med, whose patients eventually die of their chronic illnesses and Surgeons were often arrogant), and they seemed to eat well. You can occasionally save someone's life. It does feel good if you can make someone feel better. From Philly, I went far west to Pittsburgh, where the women wore animal prints before and after they were in style). I did my residency at West Penn Hospital. it was actually a good program, and had three unusual perks. It had the lightest call schedule of all US OBGYN residencies, encouraged you to moonlight for money and experience, and had a three month rotation in GYN Oncology at MD Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute in Houston, Texas. I must say it was a wonderful academic experience, and I met this young woman there with poor judgment, who eventually married me. I used to say I was just passing through town. She reminds me that Texans strongly support gun ownership, and do believe that some people need killing. Before we were married, I finished residency, and I went to join the Ohio region of Kaiser Permanente. I served in a variety of positions there, but eventually became disgruntled after 5 1/2 years. Cleveland is cold (20 degrees below zero), but the best thing that happened is that Chere (that'...Expand for more
s her name) and I married in 1986, and had (well, actually she did) twins in 1989 ( Zachary and Alexandra). To soothe my disgruntlement, we moved to Massachusetts. I was in private practice there for 7 1/2 years. I did get to be Department Chairman of OBGYN at the Hale Hospital (do not look for it, it is now closed the same as Philadelphia General although much smaller). I also got to serve on the Board of Trustees. That was a rewarding experience. Since it was a municipal hospital, I learned a lot about local politics). A patient's husband also taught me how to fish for Striped Bass n the Merrimac River. We also learned to ski as a family. That was fun. Well, Chere wanted to move south and economics were changing in New England, so we moved to Atlanta, Georgia. Chere is closer to her family in Nashville and Houston, and I am back with Kaiser Permanente. We have been here since August 1998. The children have graduated high school. Zach spent a gap year in Japan learning Japanese before enrolling at Amherst College this year (2008). Alex spent spent a gap year in Barcelona, Spain, attending a school there to learn Spanish and has started Dartmouth College this year (2008). Chere is deciding what she would like to do after dedicating all these years to raising the children. I have found a new challenge in medicine; Medical Informatics. I was always interested in combining computers and medicine and now 50 percent of my time is spent helping to develop and implement Clinical Content for Kaiser's Electronic Health Record. I am really enjoying this work, and am part of a fantastic team. This is a major part of medicine's future, and I am happy to be part of the formative stages. I am still figuring out what I want to do in life, but that is part of it, is it not? I faithfully attend each high school and college reunion. Perhaps briefly, you can go home again. So, there it is. I hope somewhat better than those questions, and thanks if you managed to stay awake to the end. 2009 Well, this past year has been uneventful. Zach and Alex are completing their first year at Amherst and Dartmouth. They seem to be happy. No word on their majors yet, though. Both plan to go back abroad at some point. My time with Medical Informatics was slightly reduced ("the economy"), but it still occupies a significant portion of my time. I still enjoy what I am doing. Chere just finished her annual stint volunteering for the Atlanta Symphony show homes. That is all for now. See all of you at the reunion in October. 09-27-09 The flood waters have receded. We are well. The kids are now back in college. Alex is plannng to major in history as part of pre-law. Zach is still undecided. Just returned yesterday from a Medical Informatics User Group Meeting (EPIC - #1 Ambulatory EMR) in Verona, WI (many cows in WI). It was rewarding and a great palce to exchange ideas. See in a couple of weeks at the reunion.
