Stephen's Story
EDUCATION AND BUMMING AROUND
After graduation, I attended Southwest Texas and in between working and the Army, earned a couple of degrees there. I also lived in Israel for awhile, before returning to Texas to work on a graduate degree in History.
CAREER
I married and started working for the Federal Government, where I put in a 30-year career.
I was fortunate to find myself in the information management field, even though I wasn't actually a "computer person". Some high points in my Federal career were serving a couple of terms as Chairman of the Information Resources Advisory Council, and later as Chairman of the Federal Records and Information Management Council. One of the last assignments I had was to serve on Vice President Gore's "Re-inventing Government" task force (in case you're interested, in addition to the above Councils, I was with the Bureau of Labor Statistics; Army Headquarters in Europe; the Army Corps of Engineers in Norfolk, Virginia; Housing and Urban Development in Washington, DC; Federal Aviation Administration in Washington, DC; and the two Councils mentioned above).
MARRIAGE AND KIDS
I've been married to Patty - an artist and antiques specialist - since 1970, and we have two children: our son was in the Army - the 101st Airborne when they invaded Iraq. He's ou...Expand for more
t of the Army, and is now now working as a special makeup effects artist (he's the guy who makes all those dead bodies on CSI, NCIS, etc.)
Our daughter is married to a professor of philosophy and religion, and is a dean of academic affairs, and they have supplied us with three grandsons.
WHERE WE LIVED IN RECENT YEARS
After I retired, Patty and I lived in on a small ranch in central Texas for awhile, and then moved to the Nashville area, to be nearer to the grandkids. We moved (following the G-kids again) to northern Georgia, and really enjoy it here.
TIME OUTS
I spend most of my leisure time helping my wife remodel/redecorate our home and also reading mostly British history. I'm happy to have been a member of the International Churchill Societies and the Churchill Center in Washington, DC.
Workplace
Please see my "Life" bio for a few brief comments about my work career.
Military
I spent time in the U.S. Army, stationed primarily in Germany. I was - for a time - in the Artillery (where, like most other Artillery guys, I received some hearing damage), and then learned some computer skills, finishing my tour of duty in purely office work at 4th Armored Division headquarters in Goeppingen, Germany, as a Specialist 5th Class. Neither the Division nor that rank still exist - oh, well.
